ALBEQUERQUE, NM – After weather forced a cancellation of the first match, Tarleton State moved inside to win an in-region tennis match against Colorado Mesa on the opening day of the New Mexico University tournament Friday.
 
"It was a cold and snowy day," said head coach Lance Drake. "Our match against Metro State was cancelled because Metro was unable to get out of Denver. We had to move inside for our match against Colorado Mesa and we were able to defeat a very solid CMU team.
 
"It's tough sitting around and then just playing your match on three courts," he continued. "We played hard and earned a positive result."
 
Tarleton opened the match by taking a 2-1 advantage after doubles action.
 
Luiza Ferraro-Adas and Ashleigh Elward paired up in the top-seeded match to earn an 8-4 win while Ariadna Cabezas-Marti and Erika Richarme finished off an 8-6 win in the No. 3 to put Tarleton on top heading into singles play.
 
In singles action, Tarleton finished things off quickly with three wins in the top three spots.
 
Richarme and Elward handled the top two spots with ease as Richarme won the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-3 and Elward took the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-2. Ferraro-Adas earned the final win for Tarleton to secure the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 victory in the No. 3 match.
 
Tarleton's only losses of the afternoon came in No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles.
 
The TexAnns were scheduled to play Western New Mexico tomorrow afternoon but weather has forced the match to cancel. According to Drake, the teams are working to reschedule the match.
