LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton State bowed out of the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament in the semifinal round Friday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to No. 14 Midwestern State.
Â
The TexAnns were forced to play from behind after dropping all three doubles matches to begin the tournament. Tarleton fell 8-1, 8-0 in the top two matches before an 8-2 finish in the No. 3 meeting sent the TexAnns into singles play looking to rally.
Â
"The scores weren't indicative of it, but the doubles matches were actually pretty good," said head coach
Lance Drake. "The No. 2 and 3 matches were good doubles matches, but we just couldn't get the final point to fall our way."
Â
Gabriella Jansson and
Ariadna Cabezas-Marti fell in the No. 5 and 6 matches by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 while the top four matches were left unfinished after Midwestern State clinched the match.
Â
Erika Richarme had taken the first set off the No. 34-ranked player in the nation, Kayla Casey, 6-2 in the No. 1 match before it was cut short.
Â
"The first four singles matches were shaping up to be great battles before they got cut short. I would have liked to see how they would have played out," said Drake. "We battled but we lost to a better team today.
Â
"Overall, we were very young and very inexperienced. We grew throughout the year and we'll use this and build on it for next year."
Â
Tarleton wraps up the season with a 6-9 record, but will return all six competitors for next season after competing this season with three sophomores and three freshmen.
