SAN ANGELO – It doesn't matter if it's at home or on the road, Tarleton keeps winning. The TexAnns won their fourth straight game by defeating Angelo State 65-50 at the Junell Center.
Â
It's the first time since 2014 that Tarleton has won four straight Lone Star Conference games and it took defeating an Angelo State team that was 11-1 at home to reach that mark. Angelo State also entered the game ranked No. 24 in the nation in an unofficial national poll.
Â
Tarleton (13-9, 7-5) had a 16-11 lead after the first quarter that was built on an 11-3 run by the TexAnns. Tarleton only had one player score in double figures, but that's a testament to the ball movement the TexAnns had and getting everyone involved. During the first-quarter run, five different TexAnns scored:
Breanna Fuller,
Ikpeaku Iwobi,
Bailey Wipff,
Raven McGrath and
Travanti Downes.
Â
Limiting the turnovers is a key ingredient for any team, especially Tarleton. The TexAnns only had nine turnovers in the win, and improved their record to 9-0 on the season when they have 15 turnovers or less. Tarleton forced Angelo State into 19 turnovers.
Â
Once Tarleton built a lead in the opening quarter, they never trailed again. The TexAnns built a 12-point lead on Fuller's jumper with 5:37 left in the first half. Fuller finished with a season-high 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Â
The TexAnns took a double-digit lead into the break at 35-25 while shooting 44 percent from the floor. It's the fifth straight game Tarleton has led at halftime.
Â
Wipff drained a 3-pointer in the third quarter to put Tarleton back up to a 10-point lead at 44-34 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Angelo State would go on a 9-3 run to close the third quarter with the TexAnns leading 47-43.
Â
The fourth quarter was all Tarleton, though. The TexAnns would go on a 7-0 run midway through the fourth quarter that was capped off by a McGrath 3-pointer. McGrath scored nine points with six rebounds and a team-high four assists. McGrath's biggest stat that doesn't show on the box score, however, was her defensive presence on Angelo's Taylor Dorsey, the Lone Star Conference leader in points per game at 17.3. McGrath limited Dorsey to only 11 points – three in the second half – on 4-of-11 shooting.
Â
Tarleton would close the game on a 7-2 run for its biggest lead at 15 points. Tarleton shot 39 percent on the game and 34 percent on 3-pointers. The TexAnns improved to 9-1 on the season when they hold opponents under 60 points and 10-2 when they shoot at least 36 percent from the floor.
Â
Morgan Ashmore,
Bailey Wipff and
Ikpeaku Iwobi all scored eight points for Tarleton.
Meagan O'Dell and
Averie Mack each added six points apiece.
Â
The TexAnns will look to make it five straight when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m.
