TexAnns ride dominant first half to fifth straight win

STEPHENVILLE – Led by 19 points from Bailey Wipff and a career-high seven blocks from Breanna Fuller, Tarleton has pushed its winning streak to five in a row with a 61-53 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night.

It is the first five-game winning streak in the young head coaching career of Tarleton's Misty Wilson.

After Kingsville scored first and kept the game at 4-4 over the first 4:20 of the game, a layup from Breanna Fuller sank a bucket for a 6-4 Tarleton lead – which would ultimately go down as the final lead change of the game. Fuller's layup started a 10-4 Tarleton run over the rest of the opening quarter to put Tarleton up 14-8 after one.

A Bailey Wipff 3-ball got the scoring started in the second quarter and the TexAnns went on to outscore the Javelinas 16-6 in the second period and take a 30-14 lead into halftime. Tarleton shot .400 from the floor in the opening half, including .429 from downtown, while holding the Javelinas to just .222 from the floor.

Wipff poured in 10 of her game-high 19 points in the opening half while seven other TexAnns scored in the first 20 minutes of the contest.

Tarleton maintained it double-digit lead through the entire third quarter, never leading by less than 10, before taking a 14-point advantage into the final quarter. After a Wipff 3-ball pushed the Tarleton lead to 17 to begin the final quarter, Kingsville pushed back with a 17-8 run of its own to make it a six-point game at 54-48 with 1:46 left in the game.

Wipff put in a layup to stop the run as Tarleton maintained at least a six point lead over the rest of the game en route to the win. Wipff led the team with 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor, including 3-5 from downtown, to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

Breanna Fuller flirted with a double-double despite only having three rebounds. The 6-2 senior from Huntsville scored 10 points and blocked a career-high seven Kingsville shots.

Morgan Ashmore (8), Ikpeaku Iwobi (8), and Raven McGrath (2) combined for 18 points to round out the scoring from Tarleton starters. Travanti Downes (6), Meagan O'Dell (3), Nia Jackson (2), Averie Mack, (2), and Catherine Okwilagwe (1) combined for 14 points off the Tarleton bench.

Tarleton won the rebounding battle 43-40, led by a career-high six from Morgan Ashmore.

The TexAnns will return to action Wednesday night on the road in Portales, New Mexico with a 6:30 p.m. CST tip-off against Eastern New Mexico.
