STEPHENVILLE – Seeking vengeance from their last meeting a month ago, Tarleton exacted its revenge in blowout fashion Wednesday night when the TexAnns earned a 63-49 win over Midwestern State in front of a capacity crowd in Wisdom Gym.
Â
Midwestern State scored the game's opening bucket, but that would be the closest the Mustangs would get to being in control of the game as the TexAnns rallied – beginning with a
Morgan Ashmore jumper at the 7:53 mark.
Â
The Ashmore basket was the first of eight unanswered Tarleton points that put the TexAnns in control. They eventually stretched it to 15-7 by the end of the quarter.
Â
Things stayed between a four and eight-point Tarleton lead over the first 4:21, but a 3-pointer by
Tiara Tatum off a pass from
Bailey Wipff put the TexAnn lead to double figures for the first time at 25-15. The lead stayed to at least 10 over the rest of the opening half and Tatum, who scored a career-high 13 points off the bench, drained another triple to beat the halftime buzzer and send Tarleton into the break on top 33-20. Tatum shot 4-5 from the floor, including 2-2 from downtown, and 3-6 from the free throw line.
Â
Midwestern State pulled within eight over the first three minutes of the new half, but another jumper from Ashmore started the final run of domination by Tarleton. Over the final 15:52, Tarleton never led by less than 10 and stretched the lead to as many as 20.
Â
Joining Tatum in double figures were
Bailey Wipff (11) and
Breanna Fuller (12) for the night. The two TexAnns combined to shoot 8-15 from the floor. Fuller added seven rebounds and a pair of blocks while Wipff grabbed three boards.
Â
Ashmore scored eight while
Meagan O'Dell (5), Ikpekau Iwobi (4),
Catherine Okwilagwe (3),
Raven McGrath (3),
Averie Mack (2), and
Karah Sicurella (2) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton. As a team, the TexAnns shot .417 on 20-54 shooting from the floor. Tarleton also won the battle of the benches 25-6, led by Tatum's 13 points.
Â
Tarleton will look to extend its winning streak to three on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. road game against Cameron.
