TexAnns win third straight with 12-point road victory at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton continues to climb up the standings in the Lone Star Conference by winning its third straight game with a 73-61 victory on the road at Cameron.

This isn't the same TexAnn team that fell to Cameron 83-71 in the LSC opener on Jan. 2. A month later, the TexAnns, winners of three of the last four, are taking care of the basketball (11 turnovers), shooting high-percentage shots (41 percent) and are playing determined. This is also the first time Tarleton has won in Cameron since 2012 and snapped a 6-game skid against the Aggies.

Tarleton (12-9, 6-5 in the LSC) got off to a hot start from behind the 3-point arc in the first quarter, drained three 3s – two by Bailey Wipff and one by Raven McGrath – to build an early 15-13 lead. Cameron, however, led 19-15 through the first 10 minutes.

Tarleton made the adjustments on the defensive end, holding Cameron to six second-quarter points. The TexAnns regained the lead on Breanna Fuller's layup for a 20-19 advantage with seven minutes left in the half. Fuller scored nine points – seven in the second half – on 57 percent shooting along with four rebounds.

Leading 25-23 with three minutes to go before the half, Tarleton went on a 7-0 run with points from Ikpeaku Iwobi, Averie Mack and Tiara Tatum to build a 34-25 advantage at the break. Tarleton has held a first-half lead in four straight games.

Wipff opened the second half with one of her team-high four 3-pointers giving her 52 3-pointers this season and making the junior guard one of 12 players in TexAnn history with at least 50 3s in a single season. Wipff finished with a team-best 18 points and pulled down four rebounds.

McGrath was just as efficient behind the arc and helped the TexAnns build a 14-point third-quarter lead when the senior drilled back-to-back 3-pointers. McGrath scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor, 3-of-3 on 3-pointers, and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Tarleton started the fourth quarter strong with a 9-2 run, capped off by Fuller's layup to give the TexAnns their biggest lead of the game at 63-46. Cameron would climb back to a 6-point game with 1 minute left, but Tarleton went 8-of-10 from the free-throw line down the stretch to close the game.

Iwobi scored 13 points for Tarleton and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds (four offensive) along with three assists. Morgan Ashmore dished out a four assists and had three rebounds.

Tarleton had 20 points off the bench in the win, with seven coming from Meagan O'Dell, six points by Averie Mack, five by Tiara Tatum and two points for Travanti Downes.

Tarleton will look to extend its winning streak to four games on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. when they go on the road to Angelo State.
