LAWTON, Okla. – An RBI fielder's choice by Cameron in the bottom of the seventh erased Tarleton's comeback attempt as the Texans fell to the Aggies 4-3 in Saturday's series opener.
Â
Cameron got on the board first with two runs in the first and one in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead over the Texans, which held through the opening six innings.
Â
Tarleton's bats came to life in the top of the seventh when
Conner Wrye and
Stacy Heinatz earned a walk and a single to bring up the top of the lineup with two away.
Landon Merka put Tarleton on the board with an RBI double before
Alec Humphreys tied the game with a two-run single into center field.
Â
Cameron answered in the ensuing half-inning with an RBI fielder's choice off reliever
Hunter Houston, who came in for
Trevor Renfro. Renfro suffered his first loss of the season by allowing the go-ahead baserunner to reach in the seventh, but still gave the Texans six quality innings allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Houston went two innings of no-hit work to close it out.
Â
Tarleton had two runners on with one out in the ninth but couldn't cash in as the final out was called.
Â
Led by a 4-for-4 effort from Merka in in the leadoff spot, Tarleton had a nine-hit effort with the other five coming from Humphreys,
Garret Kizer, and Heinatz. Humphreys and Heinatz each had two base hits.
Â
The Texans will return to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader against the Aggies.
