LAWTON, Okla. –
Jacob French and
Hunter Houston combined to keep the Cameron Aggies in check from the mound in game one as Tarleton earned a split of Sunday's doubleheader at McCord Field.
Â
Game 1: Tarleton 5, Cameron 3
Â
In his last outing,
Jacob French earned his first win in two calendar years with eight innings of dominance over Eastern New Mexico and the senior right-hander from Kingwood kept right on rolling with a five-inning win that
Hunter Houston closed out for a save Sunday.
Â
Cameron got to French for the first run in the game with an RBI single in the third inning for a 1-0 lead, but after that, the Aggies could only muster individual unearned runs in the fifth and sixth before Houston came in to close the door with two innings of one-hit, shutout baseball. French went five innings, allowing three runs – one earned – on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Â
Meanwhile, Tarleton's offense showed up in support of the two-man pitching staff beginning in the fourth inning when
Stacy Heinatz plated
Zach McCown on a squeeze bunt to tie the game at 1-1
Â
The scoring continued in each of the next three innings with two in the fifth on RBI singles from
Jake Hasbrouck and
Zach McCown, one in the sixth on an RBI single into left from
Hunter Seales, and one in the seventh on an RBI sacrifice fly from McCown for the fifth run of insurance for the Texans.
Â
Alec Humphreys and Hasbrouck each had two hits for four of Tarleton's seven base hits on the day, while Seales, McCown, and Heinatz had one hit each to round out the effort.
Â
Game 2: Cameron 10, Tarleton 7
Â
In the nightcap, Tarleton saw a five-run first inning cancelled out by a five-run sixth inning from Cameron as the Aggies defeated the Texans 10-7.
Â
Tarleton jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with an RBI single from Hasbrouck, an RBI double from
Landon Thompson, a two-RBI triple by
Zach McCown, and an RBI double from
Stacy Heinatz as the Texans batted around and scored five runs on four hits and an error.
Â
After Cameron scratched back with one run each in the first three innings, Tarleton tacked on one in the fourth with a run-scoring error and another in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Zach Fleet. But Cameron answered back with two in the sixth and five in the seventh to deliver the loss to Tarleton.
Â
The Texan offense scored seven runs on eight hits with Thompson recording a multi-hit effort with a 2-for-4 day at the dish.
Landon Merka, Seales, Hasbrouck, McCown, Fleet, and Heinatz had one hit each.
Â
Tarleton would look to salvage a series split with the final game tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Lawton.
