CANYON – Tarleton split a Saturday evening doubleheader with No. 15 West Texas A&M at Wilder Park.
Â
In the first game of Saturday's twin bill, Tarleton evened the series at one win apiece behind
Trevor Renfro's third win of the season from the mound and a three-RBI day from
Zach McCown.
Â
The scoring started in the second inning when Tarleton took advantage of a pair of WT errors.
Â
Garret Kizer scored the first run when
Stacy Heinatz reached on an error by the third baseman. After a wild-pitch strikeout allowed
Landon Merka to reach and Matt Olive to score, Alex Humphreys plated Heintaz for a 3-0 Tarleton lead with an RBI single into left field.
Â
Tarleton tacked on two more in the next inning when McCown ripped a two-run double into centerfield, plating Kizer and
Conner Wrye for a 5-0 Texan lead. Meanwhile,
Trevor Renfro was in the zone, posting goose eggs in the first four frames.
Â
The Texan offense continued to pile it on in the fifth, starting with a one-out home run from
Jake Hasbrouck. McCown followed up with a two-out, RBI double to score Wrye before Olive capped off the three-run inning with an RBI single of his own to bring McCown across the plate.
Â
West Texas A&M broke through on the run column in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI groundout, RBI single, and a two-run home run to cut into the Tarleton lead 7-4. Renfro responded by keeping West Texas A&M off the board in the sixth to send the game to the final inning and Tarleton on top by three.
Â
Zach Freeman came on and got the first two outs before two walks and a two-run home run chased him from the game.
Hunter Houston came on and earned the save by getting the final out to fly to centerfield for the Tarleton win.
Â
The Texan offense clubbed 11 hits, including a pair of three hit performances from Humphreys and Kizer. McCown also had a multi-hit game by going 2-4 while Olive, Wrye, and Hasbrouck had the other three hits in the Tarleton offensive attack.
Â
In the nightcap, Tarleton suffered a 7-0 loss in a two-hit shutout at the hands of the Buffs. Kizer and Humphreys each had a single in second game. Tarleton will look to bring home a series split tomorrow afternoon when the Texans and Buffs take the field at Wilder Park for the series finale at 1 p.m.
