STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton dropped its second straight game with a 24-15 loss to Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Despite a season-high 397 passing yards from quarterback
Zed Woerner, the Greyhounds had a pair of running backs top 100 yards on the ground and amassed 438 yards of total offense in the win. The Texans move to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half, but two Tarleton turnovers – an interception and a fumble – led to 10 Eastern New Mexico points. The Greyhounds capitalized on a first-quarter interception, settling for a 20-yard field goal. After a 24-yard touchdown run by Tayshaun Gray that gave ENMU a 10-0 lead, the Texans fumbled a completed pass at the Greyhound 27.
On the ensuing drive, the Greyhounds used a wide receiver pass to connect with all-conference running back Kamal Cass for a 44-yard touchdown reception and a 17-0 lead with 9:51 left in the first half.
Tarleton got its first big play of the game when
Elliott Hart blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt. Woerner completed five of six passes on the next drive to put the Texans in the red zone.
Daniel McCants capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 17-6 after a missed extra point right before the half.
Cass opened the second half with his second touchdown of the game, this time a 2-yard run to give the Greyhounds a 24-6 lead. Cass finished with 109 yards on the ground and 44 yards receiving, both team highs.
Tarleton would score the next nine points of the game on a 27-yard field goal by
J.R. Fullen, which was his first career field goal. With 6:30 left in the game, Woerner found
Jacob Kaspar in the corner of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown pass for the game's final points. Kaspar finished with four catches for 47 yards in the game.
Offensively, the Texans put up 419 yards, but only 22 of the yards came on the ground.
Jeff Thomas led all players with nine catches for 134 yards.
Del'Michael High added eight receptions for 81 yards. Woerner completed a pass to 10 different receivers in the game.
Basil Jackson recorded his fifth double-digit tackle game, finishing with a team-high 11 takedowns.
Devin Hafford and
Chase Varnado each had nine tackles.
Tarleton will travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for its next game on Saturday, Oct 21 at 7 p.m., which will be televised live on the Watch ESPN app.
