Texan Baseball falls to St. Mary’s in series opener

SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton managed to overcome one deficit in Friday's series opener at Dickson Stadium against St. Mary's, but couldn't come back a second time as the Texans dropped their first game of the season.

The Texans fell in an early hole after three innings as St. Mary's built a 5-1 lead with two in the second inning and three in the third while Tarleton mustered only one run on a sacrifice fly by Blake Adams in the top of the third.

Tarleton got its offense rolling in the fourth when Tarleton led off the inning with three straight hits – a Jake Hasbrouck double, an Austin Call single, and a Dylan Lemons double – to get Tarleton one run closer at 5-2. Hunter Seales, who made his season debut after missing the home opener last weekend, drove in his first run of the season with a sacrifice fly to plate Call and make it a 5-3 game.

After St. Mary's tacked on one more in the bottom of the fourth, the Texans answered with another two spot in the fifth when Call brought home a pair with a bases-loaded single into left field to bring Tarleton within one at 6-5.

Alex DeBell, who came on in relief of starter Nathan Hickey, delivered a flawless fifth inning with a pair of strikeouts to keep Tarleton within striking distance heading into the sixth.

The offense came through with their third consecutive two-run inning when Francisco Rodriguez coaxed a bases-loaded walk to bring home Ben Mauseth. The next batter, Hasbrouck, wore a pitch with the bases juiced to plate Jose Reyes for the go-ahead run at 7-6.

St. Mary's responded with an RBI sacrifice fly and a run-scoring wild pitch to give the Rattlers their final lead of the game. The Texans managed just one more base runner – a walk that advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt – over the final three innings of the game.

Hickey, DeBell, and Matt Herrick pitched the first 5.2 innings of the game while Eli McLane and Eddie Avila pitched the final 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball, combining for one hit allowed and three strikeouts. At the dish, Tarleton totaled nine base hits led by two-hit efforts from Adams and Call. Rodriguez, Hasbrouck, Lemons, Mauseth, and Reyes each had one hit to round out the offensive attack.

The Texans will look to turn the tide and take the series when they play the Rattlers in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
