Chambers, Jenkins lead No. 11 Texans past Angelo State on WatchESPN

STEPHENVILLE – No. 11 Tarleton closed out its regular season home schedule with thrilling 76-67 come-from-behind victory over Angelo State in front of national TV audience on WatchESPN and also a sold-out Wisdom Gym.

The Texans (22-3, 13-2 LSC) have the longest current winning streak in the Lone Star Conference at six games and hold a two and a half game lead over UT-Permian Basin for first place with three games to go.

For Tarleton to pull off the victory, they had to regroup from a sluggish first half where they shot only 27 percent from the floor and was 1-of-14 on 3-pointers. Despite the struggles offensively, the Texans were only down 34-29 at the break.

To come back, the Texans turned to its two senior starters, Chantz Chambers and Romond Jenkins. The duo delivered in a big way.

Jenkins scored six of the Texans' first 13 points to start the second half that turned into a 42-38 lead with 13:18 to go and the Texans never trailed again.

Jenkins' impact on both ends of the court led to another 8-0 run where he scored five of those points, including 3-of-3 at the free-throw line during the stretch. Jenkins not only posted a double-double in the second half alone with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but he led the Texans in points (20), rebounds (15), steals (4) and blocks (3) for his 14th double-double of the season.

Chambers scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half and was big on the offensive glass, grabbing three offensive rebounds that turned into six Tarleton points.

The Texans were up 65-58 with 1:55 remaining when Angelo State cut the deficit to a four-point game on a pair of 3-pointers. The Texans closed the game on an 11-4 run by going 11-of-14 at the free-throw line down the stretch.

The Texans shot 43 percent in the second half and 35 percent for the game. They were also 35-46 at the free-throw line. Tarleton's No. 2-ranked defense forced Angelo State into 19 turnovers – 11 in the second half – that turned into 21 points.

Tarleton's starters combined for 68 of the team's 76 points with four of the five starters scoring in double figures with Ridell Camidge recording 13 points and Anthony Davis putting up 12. Both players added six rebounds, too. Deshawn Riddick added eight points and a team-best two assists on the night.

Nosa Ebomwonyi continues to provide quality production off the bench with eight points – all at the free-throw line – and six rebounds.

Tarleton has now won 14 straight against Angelo State in Wisdom Gym dating back to 2001.
