TexAnns fall on the road to Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE – Tarleton women's basketball dropped its road contest to Texas A&M-Commerce 74-64 on Tuesday at The Fieldhouse.

The TexAnns (12-11, 11-6 LSC) and the Lions (18-7, 12-5) entered the game tied in the LSC standings and also were tied early in the fourth quarter before A&M-Commerce outscored the TexAnns by 12 to come away with the victory.

Tarleton went to the hot shooting hand of Bailey Wipff, the reigning LSC Offensive Player of the Week, who scored her team's first seven points of the game. Wipff finished with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. Travanti Downes' jumper in the final seconds gave the TexAnns a 13-12 lead through the opening quarter.

The TexAnns kept the scoring rolling into the second quarter with an 11-0 run to open the frame to go up 24-12, the largest lead of the game for either team. The scoring came to a halt in the second quarter for the TexAnns as they managed only a pair of free throws from Mackenzie Hailey in the final 4:29 of the quarter and A&M-Commerce put up 11 points during the stretch. Tarleton still led 25-23 at halftime.

Tarleton was able to build a seven-point advantage in the third quarter by going 7-8 at the free throw line and Kylee Collins' and-1 layup for a 39-32 lead. However, both teams put up 22 points in the third quarter and the TexAnns went to the fourth with a two-point lead, 47-45.

The Lions opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run for its first lead since the first quarter and never trailed again once they went up 51-47. A&M-Commerce scored 27 points in the fourth quarter after only managing 23 points in the first half.

Mackenzie Hailey led all scorers with 22 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Tiara Tatum had nine points, three assists and three steals. Ikpeaku Iwobi added seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Kylee Collins had four points and a pair of steals.

The TexAnns only managed six points off the bench, all coming from Travanti Downes. Tarleton shot 35 percent on the game and 76 percent from the free throw line (19-25).

The TexAnns will travel to Denton to take on Texas Woman's on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
