SAN ANTONIO – The Tarleton TexAnn tennis team dropped their third consecutive match to a nationally-ranked opponent with a 3-6 loss to No. 12 St. Mary's Saturday.
"We started out with top of the line doubles play," said head coach
Lance Drake. "Elena and Luiza played great against the No. 1 team in the region from St. Mary's and Alicia and Tori battled back from a 2-5 deficit. We competed hard and gave ourselves an opportunity. Unfortunately, only Alicia was able to close out her match but everyone put up great fight today."
Tarleton came out swinging by taking two points in doubles action, highlighted by a national upset in the No. 1 doubles match. The TexAnn tandem of
Elena Preadca and
Luiza Ferraro-Adas knocked off the No. 6-ranked doubles pairing in the nation and the top-ranked team in the region from St. Mary's with an 8-4 win in the No. 1 match.
Meanwhile, the freshman pairing of
Alicia Barbaroux and
Tori Simmons handled the No. 3 match 8-5.
St. Mary's rallied in singles play as Barbaroux was the only TexAnn to secure a solo win. The freshman from France defeated Tyra Timm in the No. 4 match after rallying from a 4-6 loss in the first game. Barbaroux bounced back with a 6-3 and 6-1 win in the next two games to clinch her match win.
