STEPHENVILLE – Despite 20-point scoring performances from
Randall Broddie and
Corinthian Ramsey, Tarleton suffered its first loss of the young season 87-77 to UC-Colorado Springs in the F&M Bank Tip-Off Classic Friday night.
Tarleton got on the board first with an old-fashioned three-point play from
Jaraan Lands to get the scoring started. Broddie followed up with his first points in front of the Tarleton faithful to start a 7-0 Tarleton run that put the Texans up 10-2 with 15:35 left in the opening half.
The Cougars answered with a 16-7 run of their own to take a one-point lead on the lower side of the eight-minute media. The would push their lead out to as many as 17 over the remainder of the first half before ultimately sending the game to halftime with Tarleton trailing 42-30.
UCCS opened the second half by maintaining its double-digit lead, but Tarleton rallied when a pair of Broddie free throws with just under seven minutes left started a 12-2 run by the Texans that pulled Tarleton within five with 3:22 to play. Tarleton couldn't cap off the rally, though, as UCCS scored four straight free throws to push the lead back to nine before ultimately winning by 10.
Broddie (23) and Ramsey (22) combined for 45 of the team's 77 points on 14-34 shooting from the floor. Ramsey was 9-9 at the free throw line and added five assists.
Lands also scored 11 points while
Josh Hawley (7),
Richie Mitchell (5),
Jesse Hill (5),
Preston Enloe (3), and
Clashon Gaffney (1) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton.
The Texans will return to action tomorrow night in the final game of the F&M-Bank Tip-Off Classic at 7 p.m. against the University of the Southwest.
