Walks doom Texans in series finale against No. 14 Javelinas

STEPHENVILLE – Texas A&M-Kingsville took advantage of 12 walks from the Texan pitching staff and Tarleton could not complete the four-game sweep of the Javelinas with a 14-1 loss Sunday afternoon.

"A wise man once told me, 'Some days you're the dog and some days you're the fire hydrant.' We just need to learn our lessons from today, move forward and get ready for next week," said head coach Bryan Conger.

Through the first four innings of the game, Texas A&M-Kingsville jumped out to a 10-1 lead while only collecting three base hits. Each of those hits followed multiple walks – a two-run double and two bases-clearing doubles – while a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk allowed two more free passes to come across.

Four Texan pitchers combined for 10 runs – nine earned – on three hits and the nine walks over the first four innings. Three more Texans closed out the final three innings of the game with Chris Reed working the cleanest inning – a scoreless fifth with just one walk.

Meanwhile, the Tarleton offense scored one in the third when Ruben Rodriguez ripped a liner back up the middle to plate Blake Adams, who led off the inning with a triple to right field.

Tarleton got a single hit from four different Texans on the day – Adams, Ruben, Tyler Fowler, and Elvin Alamo.

The Texans will head to Angelo State next weekend for an altered four-game series against the Rams. The series will be a tradition 1-2-1 format beginning on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. There will be a Friday night doubleheader at 4 p.m. and the series closes out Saturday at 1 p.m.
