Conner Fletcher threw his first career complete game and gave Tarleton its 20
th win of the season in a 9-3 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Friday at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
"We are happy for the win and extremely proud of the effort Fletch gave us today," said head coach
Bryan Conger. "However, we need to come out with more energy and intent tomorrow. That is controllable and something we need to be better at."
The Texans improved to 20-13 overall with the win and 5-4 in the Lone Star Conference.
Fletcher (4-1) was dominant on the mound for the Texans, carrying a no-hitter through six innings. Eastern New Mexico's first hit came on a double to lead off the seventh inning, but Fletcher got out of the jam with an inning-ending double play. In all, Fletcher surrendered four hits, gave up three runs (all unearned), walked two and struck out seven in nine innings of work. Fletcher's ERA also lowered to a team-leading 2.84 on the season.
Tarleton manufactured three runs in the first five innings before pulling away with a four-run sixth inning.
Luke Morton's leadoff double in the second inning allowed him to score the game's first run on
Elvin Alamo's sacrifice fly. The Texans added a run in the fourth on
Francisco Rodriguez's RBI single that scored
Hunter Hudson for a 2-0 lead. The Texan lead grew to 3-0 in the fifth when
Dylan Lemons ripped a single up the middle to score
Ruben Rodriguez.
In the sixth inning,
Blake Adams laced a double to right field to bring home Hudson for the second time in the game. With two Texans on base,
Jared McCarver smacked his seventh home run of the season with a three-run shot to left field for a 7-0 advantage. McCarver tied his career high with four RBI in the game with an RBI single in the eighth.
Eastern New Mexico's only runs came in the eighth inning behind an RBI double and two-run home run.
The Texans pounded out 12 hits in the game, led by five players with multi-hit performances: Adams (2-for-3), R. Rodriguez (2-for-3), McCarver (2-for-5), Lemons (2-for-5), and Hudson (2-for-2).
The Texans also stole five bases in the game with
Blake Adams and R. Rodriguez swiping two bags each.
Tarleton will resume the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Greyhounds beginning at 1 p.m.
