ODESSA – Tarleton won both games of Saturday's doubleheader after scoring the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh in each game at UTPB Field.
Game 1: Tarleton 3, UT Permian Basin 2
Tarleton outlasted UT Permian Basin 3-2 in a pitcher's duel in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Colby Seltzer came out swinging as the freshman led off the game with a double and quickly came in to score the first run of the game on an RBI single from
Tyler Fowler. After a couple of walks,
Jake Spence extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to bring Fowler home for a 2-0 Tarleton lead.
That's all the offense Tarleton would muster over the next five innings while
Brian Archibald dealt from the mound.
Archibald tossed six innings allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits and a walk while striking out six. The only runs he allowed came in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2, which carried into the seventh inning.
Abel Osoria coaxed a two-out walk in the seventh to spark the Tarleton rally.
Sam Scarborough and
Jacob Walker extended the inning with a single and a walk, respectively, to load the bases. Seltzer finished what he started by wearing a hit by pitch to bring home pinch-runner
Zach Mesa for the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Brett Gilchrist came on in the seventh and worked around a two-out single and walk to lock down his first career save. He saved the fifth win of the season for Archibald.
Tarleton managed three hits in the game – one each from Seltzer, Fowler, and Scarborough – while working six walks from the UTPB pitching staff.
Game 2: Tarleton 5, UT Permian Basin 3
Jon Law went 3-4 at the dish with two RBI, including the go-ahead run driven in in the top of the seventh, to lift Tarleton past the Falcons in the second game of Saturday's twin bill.
Law got the scoring started right away with an RBI single into right field to plate
Tyler Fowler, who ripped a one-out double two batters prior. The Falcons answered with an RBI in their half of the first to tie the game.
After two straight scoreless frames, Tarleton capitalized for two runs with two outs to take a 3-1 lead.
Jordan Parker led off the inning with a double and, after back-to-back strikeouts,
Jacob Walker didn't let the leadoff two-bagger go to waste by driving him home with an RBI double. Walker then came in to score on an RBI single from
Colby Seltzer.
The Falcons tied things up with two in the fifth inning and that 3-3 score carried into the seventh.
Fowler sparked the rally with a leadoff walk and a one-out stolen base before Law drove him home with an RBI double to give Tarleton the lead at 4-3. Law then came in to give Tarleton an insurance run on an RBI single from
Hunter Thomas.
Chris Reed worked around two singles in the seventh to close out the game and earn his second win of the season in relief. Reed threw the final 2.1 innings after relieving Thomas, who started the game and went 4.2 innings and struck out six.
Law led the offense with a 3-4 day at the dish while Seltzer, Fowler,
Jake Spence, Parker,
Zach Mesa, Walker and Thomas had one hit each to round out the 10-hit effort.
Tarleton and UT Permian Basin will finish the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
