TexAnns bow out of LSC Tournament after semifinal offensive explosion

FRISCO --  Tarleton women's basketball fell to Angelo State in one of the more exciting and historical games in Lone Star Conference history, 108-103, in the tournament semifinals on Saturday at the Comerica Center.

The TexAnns, who drop to 22-8 on the year, entered the LSC tournament ranked No. 5 in the NCAA South Central Regional rankings. With regionally-ranked wins over West Texas A&M, Lubbock Christian, Texas A&M-Commerce and Eastern New Mexico, the TexAnns appear to be a sure bet to make the regional tournament for the third straight year.

The NCAA selection show will take place on Sunday, March 10 at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com. There will also be a selection show watch party in the Texan Room in Wisdom Gym.

It's the first time in program history that both teams scored over 100 points in a game. It's also a Tarleton record for points scored and allowed in an LSC tournament game. The TexAnns also topped 100 points against an NCAA opponent for the first time since 2012 when they scored 102 against Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The TexAnns shot 62 percent for the game and was one make away from setting the LSC tournament record for field goal percentage in a game.

Kaylee Allen was one of three TexAnns to score at least 25 points, finishing with 27 points, six rebounds and five assists. Mackenzie Hailey had 26 points and 12 rebounds while McKinley Bostad posted 26 points and five assists.

The TexAnns came out firing and draining shots from the beginning and never cooled off. They built an 11-4 lead over the Rambelles, which was the largest lead of the game for the TexAnns. Angelo State led 35-27 after the first period after shooting 87 percent from the floor and the TexAnns shot 66 percent.

The offense didn't slow down in the second quarter either. In fact, the TexAnns topped 24 points in all four quarters of the game. The lowest total in a quarter was 22 by the Belles in the fourth quarter. Angelo State led 62-51 at halftime with the Belles shooting 74 percent and the TexAnns at 62 percent.

Angelo State built a 13-point lead in the third quarter – the largest of the game. But the TexAnns battled back to outscore the Belles in the quarter, 27-24.

Tarleton got the game to within one point in the fourth quarter at 102-101 with 2:03 left after an and-1 from Allen. It was the closest the TexAnns would get as Marquita Daniels, who had a game-high 29 points, made a layup for a 3-point game and then blocked a TexAnn layup attempt that allowed the Belles to go up by five.

Katie Webster was one of four TexAnns in double figures with 10 points and added three rebounds and three assists. Nina Alvarez led the TexAnns off the bench with eight points, four rebounds and four assists. Kylie Collins and Kandyn Faurie each added three points.
