Late penalty kick gives Sam Houston win over Tarleton

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Tarleton and Sam Houston were neck and neck for nearly the entire competition on Sunday at Pritchett Field. Each team scored a goal in the 64th minute, but ultimately the Bearkats claimed the 2-1 home victory over the Texans with a late penalty kick in the 85th minute.

Sam Houston (3-6-2, 2-3-1 WAC) was the first to score in the game, on the first of two Landri Townsend goals. Only 21 seconds after a goal from the Bearkats, Tarleton's Mila Bettinelli responded with a goal of her own to tie the game at 1-1. The Texans (4-5-3, 0-3-2 WAC) proceeded to dominate the offensive side of the field until the Bearkats were awarded a penalty kick off of a fast break putting them ahead 2-1. The Texans hurried to equalize the game but fell short as time expired.

The Texans and Bearkats both took 12 shots and committed nine fouls on the game. Tarleton's Delaney Castor recorded three saves for the game and Bettinelli scored her fourth goal of the season.

Tarleton will be looking to turn their four-game road trip around Oct. 14 against California Baptist in Riverside, California.
