WICHITA, Kansas – The Texans never let Wichita State run away with the game, even when falling behind by double figures at Charles Koch Arena. Several momentum shifting plays by Tarleton kept the Shockers on their toes, but the Texans ultimately fell 83-71 to a stacked Wichita State team Saturday afternoon.
The game started with perhaps the quickest first bucket in Texan history as
Shamir Bogues recovered the tip-off, sprinted down the court and scored a layup all in the span of three seconds. The Texans led the Shockers by as much as two points after the first two minutes of play, but it was the last time they would be in the lead. Tarleton (3-3, 0-0 WAC) and Wichita State (4-2, 0-0 AAC) battled back-and-forth over the first 10 minutes of the first half, neither team gaining more than a five-point lead. The Shockers went on a 12-5 run to push their lead to 10, ultimately, they'd finish the first half up by a dozen. Wichita State grew their lead to as much as 17 roughly halfway through the second half. A 12-4 Texan run put Tarleton only seven points behind the Shockers with only 43 seconds to go in the game. Foul trouble plagued the Texans late in the game as Wichita State used the foul bonus to finish the game on a 6-1 run.
Tarleton's
Jakorie Smith led the Texans offensively scoring 19 points (7-10 FG, 2-2 3PT) while picking up three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Freddy Hicks nearly secured his first double-double of the season with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sharpshooter
Lue Williams went 5-of-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to earn 14 points and two rebounds. Bogues picked up seven points and three assists.
Mareng Gatkuoth finished with seven points and three rebounds.
Garry Clark scored six points and grabbed six rebounds.
Tiger Booker fought for four points through 15 minutes of play.
"Sorry we let you guys down on the road against a very good Wichita State team," said head coach Billy Gillispie, "but we plan to honor your presence by playing really hard against another great opponent in Weber State. We give our all and we will need everyone to bring their best and most energetic effort to help the Texans."
The Texans return home for the first time in nearly three weeks to host Weber State (2-4, 0-0 Big Sky) on Tuesday, Nov. 29, for their annual "WHITE OUT" Wisdom game. There will be 500 free t-shirts handed out prior to the 7 p.m. CT tip-off.
We love playing for you and Tuesday night should be an electric atmosphere," added Gillispie. "Look forward to seeing everyone there. No one anywhere does it better than you. Go Texans!"
