TEXAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL found their first conference win in Wisdom Gym on Wednesday when they beat UTRGV 70-60 and snapped their six-game losing streak. The Texans had their best shooting performance since December, making 22-of-51 (.431) from the field and 9-of-22 (.409) from deep, plus a 17-of-19 (.895) clip from the charity stripe. It was a back-and-forth battle in the first half with the Vaqueros going up five points for their largest lead of the game. The Texans went up 28-27 at the break and then exploded in the third quarter, scoring 22 points and maintaining a healthy lead for a majority of the 10 minutes. UTRGV climbed within one in the final quarter, but Tarleton went on an 11-0 run, not allowing a point by the Vaqueros for four minutes, to ice the game. Teresa Da Silva scored her fifth 20+ point game of the season, going for 21 points and 5-of-10 shooting from deep. Mayra Caicedo tied her season-high in assists with six, while adding 14 points. Elise Turrubiates (12) and Jenna Dick (10) were the other Texans to finish the game with double-digit scoring. Tarleton kept that same, aggressive attitude into their game against UT Arlington, but the Lady Mavericks pulled it out late from the free throw line with a 76-70 win. UTA started hot, building an 11-point lead in the first half, but the Texans climbed back for the deficit to only be four at halftime. Tarleton broke through for their first lead with 1:39 left in the third quarter, 43-41. Mason Jones hit a long ball just before the third quarter buzzer to put the Texans up four entering the final quarter. Unfortunately, the Texans gave the Lady Mavericks 18 attempts from the free throw line in the fourth that pushed them ahead in the final minutes. Turrubiates had an incredible performance, scoring a career-high 25 points. Da Silva and Caicedo also reached double-digit scoring, with Da Silva recording 16 points and Caicedo finishing with 13 points and a season-high seven assists. Tarleton will wrap up their three-game homestand on Thursday against Sam Houston at 6 p.m. in Wisdom Gym. The concession stand will be offering a $3 popcorn and candy deal to fans for National Popcorn Day during the game. The Texans have a week off before going back on the road to Utah to face Utah Tech on Jan. 26 and Southern Utah on Jan. 28.

TARLETON MEN'S BASKETBALL went 2-0 on the week and remained undefeated in Wisdom Gym with wins against Chicago State and Abilene Christian. The Texans capped off their non-conference record with a 73-63 win over the Cougars, giving them a winning record in non-conference play for the first time since becoming a Division I program. The Texans held Chicago State scoreless over the first three minutes of play, which helped them build a 15-3 lead quickly. Tarleton's defense was exhausting for the Cougars, holding them under 10 points until after the 10-minute mark had passed. The Texans led by as much as 17 points in the first half, ending the half up 37-24. Tarleton did not slow down in the second half, going up by as much as 20 points. KiAndre Gaddy led the Texans in scoring with 15 points, tying his season-high performance against Huston-Tillotson in December. Shamir Bogues, Lue Williams and Shakur Daniel also finished with double-digit scoring with 13 points apiece. Tarleton carried that energy into Saturday, as they got their revenge from New Year's Eve against Abilene Christian with a 72-63 victory. The Wildcats started hot with an 11-5 lead before the Texans started their heat check with a 17-0 run. ACU climbed back after an eight-minute scoreless drought, ending the first half down 28-27. Some big shots from behind the arc helped Tarleton gain their largest lead of the game of 14 points in the second half. The Wildcats cut it to six with just one minute remaining, but Tiger Booker scored the final seven points of the game from the charity stripe to seal the deal. Booker was one of five Texans to finish with double-digit scoring, as he had 11, Jakorie Smith and Williams finishing with 15 points, Daniel with 13 and Bogues with 12. Tarleton heads to Seattle U and California Baptist this week to try and get their first wins on the road. They will play Seattle U on Thursday at 9 p.m. then head down to California Baptist on Saturday for another 9 p.m. tip-off. The Texans will return to Wisdom Gym on (purple) Thursday, Jan. 26, where fans are encouraged to follow the Purple Thursday spirit with their attire and we will help out with free rally towels while supplies last.

TEXAN WOMEN'S TENNIS dropped both of their season-opening matches Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma, 4-0 to the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners and 4-0 to the Missouri Tigers. This snapped the Texans' seven-match winning streak they ended last season with and is the first time they have had consecutive losses since 2020-21. The Texans will look to even their record back out on Jan. 28 when they have their home-opening doubleheader against Cowley College and Weatherford College.
