NATCHITOCHES, La. – Tarleton State entered Wednesday evening's rescheduled game No. 1 in the WAC in field goal percentage (.460), but an off shooting night led to a Texan loss at Northwestern State.
The Texans (2-5, 1-1 WAC) shot below 40 percent for just the second time this season and had a season-worst night from long range (1-10). Despite all of that, they still had a chance to win at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, Louisiana, but ended up falling 59-51 to the Lady Demons (4-4, 0-0 SLC).
Teresa Da Silva returned to the starting lineup and led the Texans with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Jakoriah Long scored nine points (3-5 FG),
Elise Turrubiates tallied eight points (3-5 FG) and six rebounds, while
Faith Acker added four points, five rebounds and four blocks.
The Texans and Lady Demons were tied 40-40 entering the fourth quarter. Northwestern State won the final frame 19-11 as they outshot Tarleton 6-of-9 (.667) to 3-of-16 (.188). The Texans actually outshot the Lady Demons in the game 19-of-56 (.339) to 19-of-59 (.322), but were outrebounded 45-34.
It was a slow start to this one, with a combined three points over the first four minutes of action. The margin was one-possession for either team over the first eight minutes, with Northwestern State taking a 13-9 lead into the second quarter.
After Northwestern State led 16-9, Tarleton fought back with a 7-1 run, then tied the game at 20-20 with 3:15 to play in the second quarter. The Texans held a one-point lead at halftime, 24-23, forcing the Lady Demons to shoot 6-of-33 (.182) from the field, including 1-of-12 (.083) from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Texans had their best offensive quarter in the third, making 7-of-14 (.500). Neither team led by more than three in the frame, deadlocked at 40-40 entering the fourth.
Tied at 44-44 with 7:14 to play, Northwestern State went on a 10-1 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
The Lady Demons' Jiselle Woodson scored a game-high 19 points (8-12 FT), adding four rebounds. Carla Celaya notched 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Jasmin Dixon finished with seven points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.
The Texans will return to Stephenville for their lone home game of December. They'll host Incarnate Word on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tarleton State will have Santa and Mrs. Claus at the game to add to the Christmas spirit, plus fans are encouraged to bring Teddy Bears to the game, as the team will have a Teddy Bear Toss at halftime for a chance to win prizes, with the toys donated to the Stephenville Optimist Club.
