Rodriguez, Fox lead Texans in competitive field at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX – Sofia Rodriguez started strong and Elle Fox closed with her best round to lead the Texans at the competitive GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course in Phoenix on Monday and Tuesday.

Rodriguez finished in the top-20, posting her top two rounds of the year on Monday with an even-par 72, followed by a -1, 71. With 17 programs competing, 12 players finished under par in the tournament, setting up an impressive leaderboard.

Rodriguez took tied-19th at +3 (72-71-76) for her second straight top-20 result. Fox turned in a tournament score of +5 (75-75-71) for tied-32nd, boosting her spot by 15 on the leaderboard in Round 3 with her -1 effort.

Mathilde Brogens shot +10 (76-73-77) to take tied-49th, Rebeca Fernandez went +18 (78-77-79) for tied-76th, and Alejandra Cambronero rounded out the group at +20 (84-76-76) for tied-79th.

As a team, Tarleton took 11th at +32 (896), their second best score to par in an event this year, just one stroke back from their eighth place finish at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic in October at +31.

The Texans found their most success on Par 3's, earning the tied-fifth best overall score at +12 with an average 3.2 gross mark. They shot the seventh most pars in the tournament (164), led by Rodriguez's tied-third most 40. Fox had the tied-ninth most pars with 37.

Rodriguez opened her first 18 holes with 15 pars, holing a birdie on her sixth to be -1 under through 10. She found trouble on No. 9 with a double bogey, but immediately responded with a birdie and then finished with six straight pars to shoot even-par. In Round 2, she began with a bogey, then had a clean card the next 14 holes, going -3 over the span.

Fox shot 15 pars in her second round, then started Round 3 exceptionally, holing two birdies on the two Par 3's over her first four, staying at -2 through six. She shot four birdies in her final 18 to shoot -1.

The Texans will have about a two-week break before their next event, the HCU Husky Invitational at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas, March 13-14. Rodriguez paced Tarleton in this tournament last year with a +17 (233), good for tied-18th.
