STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton used a 10-run seventh inning to propel them to a commanding 19-0 victory to open the series vs. Prairie View A&M on Friday night at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.
The Texans (7-3) put forth 10 runs on 10 hits in the seventh inning, batting through its lineup plus five more to put the game out of reach.
Jack Wagner hit an RBI double, two runs scored on an
Alec Williams RBI single and subsequent Panther error,
Jordan Andrade hit an RBI triple,
Kooper Shook hit a team-leading third home run, this one a two-run shot, and
Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo doubled down the left field line scoring two runs, among other plays.
The Panthers (2-8) managed just three hits, striking out 15 times to just one walk.
Two Texans finished with four hits,
Mason Hammonds and
Jack Wagner, with Wagner tallying five RBI.
Hammonds, the Texans leadoff hitter and shortstop, added to his team lead in hits as he is now up to 17 on the season.
Wagner now leads the team with 14 RBI. His four hits on the night made for his first multi-hit as a Texan.
Jordan Andrade, a UNLV transfer, added a season-high three hits and an RBI.
Will Stevens (W, 1-0) earned the nod as the starting pitcher for Tarleton and had his best outing of the season, tossing a season-high in both innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (10) while giving up no runs on two hits.
Jon Cordaway,
Dominic Corgiat and
Jake Burcham each pitched an inning to help the Texans complete the shutout win. Burcham struck out the side in the ninth inning.
The Texans did not score until the third inning, as
Carter Dobrinski hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hammonds for the first run of the game. Wagner followed with a two-run single that scored Shook and
Jaime Perez.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+ as Tarleton goes for the series win.
