Tarleton State falls on Friday night to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Low nets first penalty kick goal in Tarleton history

    STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – Rylee Low cashed in on the first penalty kick in Tarleton State program history in a 3-1 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.
 
    The Islanders (4-2-1) earned their fourth win of the season, while the Texans (2-3-2) hope to earn their third win of the year and second consecutive victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday.
 
    Low's fired her penalty kick past the diving Isalnder goalie for the Texans' first goal of the match in the 71st minute.
 
    For the second time this season, Mikayla Kendall broke her own single-game saves record. Kendall grabbed 12 saves, the most in program history, surpassing her previous total of 10 set on Aug. 17, opening night against the ULM Warhawks.
 
    After a scoreless first 35 minutes of action, the Islanders broke the scoreless deadlock in the 37th minute of play. In traffic the Islanders found Kaitlyn Melton who found Ashley Wilson to give A&M-Corpus Christi the advantage, 1-0.
 
    The Islanders tacked on their second goal of the half five minutes later as Wilson found the left foot of Taylor Thibodeaux to give Corpus Christi a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
 
    In the 71st minute, Lauren Grissom drew a foul in the box and was rewarded with a penalty kick, the first taken by a Texan in program history. Low was granted the opportunity and did not disappointing firing in the first penalty kick goal in Tarleton State history. With less than 20 minutes remaining, the Texans cut the lead to 2-1.
 
    With 12 minutes remaining, the Islanders threatened to score their third goal of the match and distance themselves from the Texans but Low played lock-down defense with a side tackle and kicked the ball out to eliminate the scoring chance.
 
    The Islanders pushed the lead to 3-1 off a corner kick by Kaitlynn Melton who found Rachel Loetzer in the front oif the box for the third goal of the match in the 83rd minute. Melton tallied an assist on each of the three Islander goals in the contest.
 
    Tarleton State will close the weekend on Sunday with an afternoon road tilt at Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Pumphrey Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.
