Texans return to Lone Star State boasting 2-0 start after sweep of C-USA teams

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Tarleton State picked up right where they left off in El Paso beating the Aggies for the fifth straight time.

The Purple and White never ended up on the wrong side of things when facing the Aggies in WAC play going a perfect 4-0. With New Mexico State making the move to Conference USA this past July, the Texans' meetings with the Aggies will no longer be conference matchups. The move didn't faze the Texans one bit, with the Purple and White walking away with a 5-2 victory in Las Cruces on Saturday.

"It was another great win for our team today against another strong Conference USA team," said head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron. "We knew New Mexico State was going to fight until the end and I thought we kept our calm, played smart and used momentum to our advantage. We are excited for what's to come and can't wait to play at home next Friday."

Doubles

The Texans took the doubles point for the second straight match with a 2-1 win over the Aggies.

Martha Makantasi and Maretha Burger came out hot once again cruising to a 6-2 win over Natsuki Nishimura and Anna Pinaieva of NMSU to earn the Texans' first doubles win. This is the pair's second doubles win of the season after earning a 6-1 win over UTEP.

"Maretha and Martha played a great set of doubles and really set the tone for the day," said Douglas-Miron.

The Purple and White clinched the doubles point with a win on court three from doubles partners Emma Persson and Clara Sobius. The pair earned the 6-3 win over Whitney Moon and Dora Kurdi putting the Texans only three singles wins away from opening their season 2-0.

Noelia Lorca and Adeliya Mukhutdinova were defeated by Valeriia Ivanovskaia and Lisa Zhu 6-1.

Singles

Burger's hot streak from the doubles side of action carried over nicely to singles action with her earning the Texans' second point of the day. She earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kurdi on Court 6. This is Burger's first singles win in the Purple and White.

The next Texan put the team just one point away from earning their fifth straight win over the Aggies. Noelia Lorca put away Moon 6-3 in the first set but had to fight a little more in the second set, coming out victorious with a 7-6(3) win on Court 5.

Persson clinched for the Texans on Court 1 winning the fourth point of the day 6-4, 6-4 over Pinaieva. She is now 2-0 on the season after earning a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Carlotta Mencaglia of UTEP.

The fifth and final point was earned by Makantasi, a senior for the Purple and White who is off to a great start for her final campaign for the Texans. Makantasi notched her second win of the season with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(10-7) win over Nishimura on Court 3. She started off her season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Zuzanna Szczepanska of UTEP.

Elsa Boisson ended up on the wrong side of things falling to Zhu 6-4, 7-6(4).

Sobius ultimately fell to Ivanovskaia 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4).

The Texans will be back in action next Friday after their original home opener was postponed due to low temperatures. The Purple and White will now play their home opener two weeks after previously planned with a doubleheader hosting Cowley College at 11 a.m. and Collin College at 3 p.m. Last season the Texans put Cowley away for a 7-0 win.
