Tarleton Women’s Basketball falls to Nicholls in Big Easy Classic finale

WESTWEGO, La. – Tarleton Women's Basketball was defeated by Nicholls 58-51 in the final day of the Big Easy Classic Saturday night at the Alario Center.

Senior guard Arieona Rosborough led the Texans with 20 points to go with seven rebounds, collecting her second 20-point game of the season. Sophomore center Faith Acker added nine points while senior forward Elise Turrubiates led the Texans on the glass with eight boards.

Nicholls got off to a fast start, moving ahead by double-digits to open the first quarter. The Colonels shot 54.5% from the floor while holding the Texans to just 27.2% shooting to take a 10-point lead after the first 10 minutes.

A jumper by Rosborough on Tarleton's first offensive possession of the second quarter cut the deficit to single digits, but Nicholls kept attacking. Forcing the Texans into seven turnovers in the second quarter, Nicholls took a 28-15 advantage into the locker room.

Tightening up in the second half, Tarleton trimmed the deficit in the third quarter by getting to the charity strike. The Texans made 10-of-12 free throws to open the second half that allowed Tarleton to close the gap.

After getting a boost off the bench from a steal and free throws from freshman guard Mylasia Smith, Rosborough converted a layup while being fouled to make it a five-point game as the third quarter neared an end. Nicholls responded with a pair of free throws after an offensive rebound to stay ahead 43-36 entering the final period.

Rosborough once again lifted the Texans, collecting another basket while drawing the foul to cut Nicholls' lead to four points in the fourth quarter. Nicholls, however, scored the next two baskets to stay ahead by eight.

The Texans still fought, with senior forward Jakoriah Long coming up with a quick score following a Rosborough bucket to make it a four-point game again. Nicholls answered the bell with a jumper on the next possession and held off the Tarleton run to seal the win in the Big Easy Classic finale.

Tarleton comes back to Stephenville to take on Texas State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wisdom Gym.
