Tarleton Women’s Basketball falls to Texas State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton Women's Basketball fell short in its return to Wisdom Gym Wednesday night, falling to Texas State 71-59. 

The physical battle featured 60 fouls and 69 combined free throws, with Tarleton making 27 free throws off 41 attempts from the charity strike. Senior guard Arieona Rosborough led Tarleton in scoring, recording a team-high 16 points for the Texans Wednesday. 

Trading buckets in the opening possessions, Texas State took the early lead. Sophomore center Faith Acker cut the deficit down to two points, but a pair of buckets from the Bobcats allowed Texas State to extend its advantage. A 3-pointer from Texas State allowed the Bobcats to take a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

Texas State took a double-digit lead early in the second quarter before Tarleton responded with five straight points to cut the deficit. Free throws from senior guard Tyler Jackson made it a one-possession game, but the Bobcats used four free throws and a basket to bring it back to an eight-point game. Texas State's defense allowed the Bobcats to take a 29-21 lead going into the locker room. 

The Bobcats continued to stay out in front, extending the lead to 14 heading into the final minutes of the third period. Texas State converted a layup in the closing seconds to take a 16-point advantage with 10 minutes to play. 

Texas State opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to take its largest lead of the game and held firm on the double-digit advantage. Tarleton sank four out of its final five free throws, but the Texans were unable to make up the deficit. 

Tarleton returns to Wisdom Gym to take on LeTourneau on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Postgame Notes
  • Tarleton State and Texas State competed in women's basketball for the first time since 1983. Texas State now leads the series 2-0. 
  • 60 fouls were called in Wednesday's game and both teams shot a combined 69 free throws. Tarleton made 27 free throws off 41 attempts from the charity strike, the most makes and attempts since Feb. 26, 2021 (36-of-46, vs. New Mexico St.). 
  • Senior guard Arieona Rosborough scored a team-high 16 points for the Texans, shooting 54.5% from the floor. It was her second game in a row where she had at least 16 points.
  • Freshmen Mylasia Smith (7 points) and Grace Booth (5 points) recorded season-highs for points. 
  • Tarleton had 11 different players score. The Texans' bench also tallied 29 points on Wednesday.
