Tarleton Women’s Basketball bounces back with win over LeTourneau

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton Women's Basketball had five different players score in double figures and 56 points from its bench to clinch a 99-34 victory over LeTourneau Saturday afternoon at Wisdom Gym. 

Tarleton shot a season-high 53.6% from the floor, its highest shooting percentage since Dec. 4, 2021. 

Freshman guard Grace Booth led the Texans with her first collegiate double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Booth's 13 rebounds set a new Division I Era program record for most boards in a single game by a Tarleton freshman. The Glen Rose, Texas, native also tallied a season-high five steals, three assists and three blocks. 

Sophomore center Faith Acker added 12 points and seven rebounds while senior guard Niki Van Wyk scored 11 points in her first game since Nov. 26. Guards Arieona Rosborough and Kyriana Jones also added 10 points each for the Texans. 

Tarleton got off to a quick start in the first quarter, opening the period on a 14-2 scoring run. A LeTourneau layup cut the deficit down to single digits, but the Texans scored the final six points of the first quarter to go back in front by double figures. The Texans knocked down 12 of its 18 shots in the first quarter for 66.7% shooting to finish the opening period with a 26-11 advantage. 

Following a basket from sophomore forward Anya McKenzie, Van Wyk finished a layup through contact and converted the and one opportunity. Booth helped start a 7-0 scoring run with a 3-pointer and fast break layup, with the Texans moving ahead by 26 with just under three minutes to play. LeTourneau scored the final two baskets of the half, but the Texans remained ahead by 21 points going into the locker room. 

Tarleton continued its high-powered offense in the second half, scoring eight of the first 10 points to start the third quarter. The Texans continued to expand the lead by going on a 12-0 scoring run capped off by Van Wyk making a basket while drawing a foul. Tarleton scored on each of its final three possessions of the third quarter to hold its lead entering the final 10 minutes. 

The Texans continued to scorch the nets at Wisdom Gym in the fourth quarter, shooting 51.7% from the floor. Tarleton ended Saturday's game with 22 unanswered points to record its fifth win of the season. 

Tarleton goes on the road to take on No. 25 nationally-ranked Nebraska on Wednesday at 7 p.m. 

Postgame Notes
  • Tarleton State's bench scored a season-high 56 points to help the Texans to the 99-34 win over LeTourneau. It is the most bench points by the Texans since Dec. 4, 2021 (70 vs. Arlington Baptist). 
  • Freshman guard Grace Booth recorded her first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Booth's 13 rebounds are the most by a Tarleton freshman in a single game in the Division I Era. 
  • Tarleton shot a season-high 53.6% percent from the floor. It was the Texans' best shooting percentage in a single game since Dec. 4, 2021 (55% vs. Arlington Baptist).
  • 11 different Texans dished out an assist for a season-high 25 assists. It was the most assists by the Texans since Nov. 6, 2023 (34 vs. Howard Payne). 
  • Senior guard Niki Van Wyk came up with a season-high 11 points in her first game since Nov. 26. She missed the previous three games due to injury. 
  • Four different players (Booth, Van Wyk, Kyriana Jones and Anya McKenzie) all registered a season-high for points.
