Texans head to Utah on nation’s fourth longest active win streak

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Tarleton State Men's Basketball heads out on final road trip of regular season to Utah hoping to extend the nation's fourth longest win streak to nine games on Thursday night against the Utah Tech Trailblazers at 8 p.m. CT in Burns Arena.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Rob Zundel (pxp) and Mike Olson (analyst) on the call. Kyle Crews will have the radio call on 90.5 KTRL. Live Stats will be provided by StatBroadcast and can be found on TarletonSports.com. For highlights and live score updates follow @tarletonmbb on Twitter and Instagram.

Tarleton State enters the week on the fourth longest active win streak in the nation, eight games. The Texans are perfect in the month of February, 7-0. Tarleton is also carrying a five-game winning streak into Thursday night's contest.

Last week, the Texans enjoyed a perfect 2-0 week in a pair of revenge games. Thursday night the Texans upset the Lopes in front of a sellout Wisdom Gym crowd. Jakorie Smith led the Texans with 24 points teaming up with Devon Barnes to be the third Texan duo to each score 20 in a game this season. KiAndre Gaddy tied the Texans D1 era total rebounds in a game record with 14 matching his total at FIU earlier this season. The Texans overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and 15-point second half challenge. Tarleton outscored GCU, 55-39 in the second 20-minute session. The Texans continued the revenge series defeating CBU to avenge an earlier season road loss. Devon Barnes was the hero of the game scoring a WAC-high 33 points last week, and setting a new Texan record for points in a single game by a player. Adam Moussa earned his first double-double as a Texan with 11 points and 10 assists, the first Texan double-double with assists since Montre Gipson on Jan. 8, 2021.

The Purple and White are 13-3 in the WAC play, and 20-7 overall, breaking program records for total and WAC wins in a season and securing an over-.500 overall record for the first time in the D1 era. The Texans have reached the 20-win mark the for the 20th time in program history and the first in their Division I era.

Tarleton became the second school to clinch a bid to the 2024 WAC Tournament with a win combined with a Southern Utah loss on 2/15. Tarleton joined GCU to punch their tickets first, then was joined by Seattle U after last weekend's games.  The Texans currently have the second-best conference winning percentage and are seeded second in the WAC Resume Seeding System. The top two teams will receive a double by and play their first game in the semifinals on Friday.

KiAndre Gaddy leads the league in offensive rebounds (104). The senior would rank ninth in the nation with 3.85 offensive boards per game. The senior ranks 10th in program history and is 49 boards behind program record holder Danny Jones 153-mark. Gaddy ranks in the top seven in four different statistical categories in the conference.

In each of the last 11 games, a Texan has scored at least 20 points in each game. Williams has accounted for four 20-plus efforts in the last six contests. During ten of the last 11 games, Smith has scored at last 10 points in each.

Tarleton has been consistent with their starting lineup, featuring the same five starters for the last 25 games this season. Currently it is tied for the sixth active longest streak in the country. The Texans are one of 30 schools in the country to use three or less starting lineups this season.

Joseph Jones will be standing on the Texan sideline for the thirteenth time this season. Jones has been filling in for coach Billy Gillispie since Nov. 19 who has not been with the team due to medial circumstances. Jones was named the acting head coach on Dec. 19. He holds an 18-5 record during his time on the sidelines.

Utah Tech enters the week 10-17 overall and 6-10 in WAC play. The Thunderbirds are currently in ninth place in the standings, one game behind Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin and California Baptist. UTU is currently on a three-game losing streak after dropping a pair to Seattle U and UT Arlington last week.

Earlier this season, the Texans cruised to an 86-68 victory over the Thunderbirds to begin its current win streak. In total, TSU owns the battle of the two reclassifying schools, 5-1. Tarleton snatched a 75-71 victory last February to improve its record to 3-1 in St. George.

Tarleton will close the western road trip with a revenge date with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Saturday evening. SUU got the best of the Texans on Jan. 25, 73-70, Tarleton's last loss.
