PALM DESERT, Calif. – The Tarleton State Texans wrapped up their three-day spring opening tournament in California on Thursday, the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, held at Classic Club in Palm Desert.
Bladen Samaniego led the Texans overall at +5, thanks to his -4 (68) round on the second day, his best ever round at Tarleton State by two strokes. He shot 76-68-77 overall to finish tied-41st.
Tarleton State took 13th as a team at +27 (891 overall, 300-291-300).
Carson Gallaher finished a stroke behind Samaniego at +6 (76-72-74) for tied-51st,
Alvaro Huidobro turned in at +10 (76-73-77) for tied-69th,
Max Bengtsson went +12 (72-82-74) for tied-79th, and
Cristobal Sepulveda shot +13 (76-78-75) for tied-81st.
Samaniego shined in the second round, going -4 over his final 15 holes of spotless play. He then opened the third round on Thursday, his birthday, with four pars to make it 19 straight holes of bogey-free golf.
Gallaher also had his best round in the second, shooting even-par with 15 pars in the round, two birdies and a double bogey. He eagled No. 18, a Par 5 564-yarder, in the third round for Tarleton State's lone eagle of the tournament.
Bengtsson shot even-par on Tuesday to lead the Texans in their opening round, tied-24th entering the second day.
As a team, the Texans had the tied-second most pars in the field with 170.
Cal State Fullerton won this event at -16. Their own Tegan Andrews was the medalist at -10 (70-69-67).
The Texans have a quick turnaround now between their first two tournaments of the spring. They'll play in the Bentwater Intercollegiate Monday-Tuesday at Bentwater Yacht and Country Club in Montgomery, Texas.
