Texans seek to avenge early season loss and extend the nation’s fourth-longest active win streak to 10 games against the Thunderbirds

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Tarleton State Men's Basketball concludes its final road trip of regular season to Utah hoping to avenge a loss from earlier this season in Wisdom Gym on Saturday night against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at 7:30 p.m. CT in America First Events Center.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Parker Haynie (pxp) and Spencer Mc Laughlin (analyst) on the call. Kyle Crews will have the radio call on 90.5 KTRL. Live Stats will be provided by StatBroadcast and can be found on TarletonSports.com. For highlights and live score updates follow @tarletonmbb on Twitter and Instagram.

Tarleton State enters the weekend on the fourth-longest active win streak in the nation, nine games. The Texans finished the month of February a perfect 8-0, the first perfect month of three games or more in their D1 era and the 19th in program history. Tarleton is also carrying a six-game road winning streak into Saturday night's contest.

Thursday, the Texans used a 17-2 opening start to distance themselves from the Trailblazers of Utah Tech. Despite a few comeback efforts from UTU, the Texans never led by less than three and maintained the lead throughout the entire contest. For the fourth total time, and second as the duo, Jakorie Smith and Devon Barnes each scored 20-plus points to lead the Texans. Barnes also collected a new Tarleton WAC record six steals, tying Smith's season high of six against FIU in the second game of the year.

Devon Barnes earned his first WAC weekly award after his 55-point week as he earned WAC Newcomer of the Week on Monday. The sophomore transfer is the fourth Texan to earn a WAC weekly selection, making Tarleton the only WAC school with more than three different players this season.

The Purple and White are 14-3 in the WAC play, and 21-7 overall, breaking program records for total and WAC wins in a season and securing an over-.500 overall record for the first time in the D1 era. The Texans have reached the 20-win mark the for the 20th time in program history and the first in their Division I era.

Tarleton became the second school to clinch a bid to the 2024 WAC Tournament with a win combined with a Southern Utah loss on 2/15. Tarleton joined GCU to punch their tickets first, then was joined by Seattle U after last weekend's games.  The Texans currently have the second-best conference winning percentage and are seeded second in the WAC Resume Seeding System. The top two teams will receive a double by and play their first game in the semifinals on Friday.

KiAndre Gaddy leads the league in offensive rebounds (107). The senior would rank ninth in the nation with 3.82 offensive boards per game. The senior ranks 10th in program history and is 46 boards behind program record holder Danny Jones 153-mark. Gaddy ranks in the top seven in four different statistical categories in the conference.

In each of the last 12 games, a Texan has scored at least 20 points in each game. Barnes has had a 20-plus total in each of his last three games. During 11 of the last 12 games, Smith has scored at last 10 points in each.

Tarleton has been consistent with their starting lineup, featuring the same five starters for the last 26 games this season. Currently it is tied for the sixth active longest streak in the country. The Texans are one of 30 schools in the country to use three or less starting lineups this season.

Last week, the Texans enjoyed a perfect 2-0 week in a pair of revenge games. Thursday night the Texans upset the Lopes in front of a sellout Wisdom Gym crowd. Smith led the Texans with 24 points teaming up with Devon Barnes to be the third Texan duo to each score 20 in a game this season. Gaddy tied the Texans D1 era total rebounds in a game record with 14 matching his total at FIU earlier this season. The Texans overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and 15-point second half challenge. Tarleton outscored GCU, 55-39 in the second 20-minute session. The Texans continued the revenge series defeating CBU to avenge an earlier season road loss. Barnes was the hero of the game scoring a WAC-high 33 points last week, and setting a new Texan record for points in a single game by a player. Adam Moussa earned his first double-double as a Texan with 11 points and 10 assists, the first Texan double-double with assists since Montre Gipson on Jan. 8, 2021.

Joseph Jones will be standing on the Texan sideline for the 25th game this season. Jones has been filling in for coach Billy Gillispie since Nov. 19 who has not been with the team due to medial circumstances. Jones was named the acting head coach on Dec. 19. He holds an 19-5 record during his time on the sidelines.

Southern Utah was unable to start the week with a win, falling to the hot Abilene Christian Wildcats, 77-68 on Thursday night in Cedar City. Zion Young led SUU with 19 and was one of four Thunderbirds to register double-digit scoring totals.

The Thunderbirds hold a 2-1 advantage of the all-time series after claiming the last two meetings. On Jan. 25 Southern Utah handed Tarleton its third WAC loss in a 73-70 victory in Wisdom Gym. The Texans have never won in Cedar City falling to SUU, 72-62 on Feb. 9 last season.

Tarleton State will return to Wisdom Gym for its final two games of the regular season. Thursday night, the Texans will be in search of their sixth season sweep facing off against the Utah Valley Wolverines. In a day of goodbyes, Saturday the Texans will honor its five seniors as well as retiring Athletic Director, Lonn Reisman. Tip is slated for 4 p.m. against the Seattle U Redhawks.
