STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State is nearing the end of another special season, and for their efforts, the Western Athletic Conference honored three Texans with All-Conference postseason awards on Wednesday.
The WAC announced that
Martha Makantasi,
Elsa Boisson and
Noelia Lorca have all earned All-Conference tags, with Makantasi one of six on the WAC Singles All-Conference First Team, and Boisson and Lorca both named to the WAC Singles All-Conference Second Team.
"These are very well-deserved awards," head coach
Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "Noelia has made an immediate impact on our team. She has competed incredibly well all year and I can't wait to see her tennis continue to grow to new heights. Martha and Elsa are two of the most successful players to ever play at Tarleton and their list of accolades reflect that. I very much admire their resiliency and their unshakable desire to win. They have put Tarleton Tennis on the map and for that, I am extremely proud of them."
This is the third All-Conference singles honor for Makantasi across her four seasons in Stephenville, and the second time she's been named All-Conference First Team in singles. It's her fifth All-Conference award total, as she had two All-Conference doubles awards her freshman and sophomore campaigns.
This season, Makantasi went 15-3 in singles play, all matches played on Courts 2-3. She went 6-1 in WAC singles play. She started the season 7-0 in singles.
Makantasi had the second most singles wins on the team and had major wins over the likes of UTEP's Suzanna Szczepanska, New Mexico State's Natsuki Nishimura and UTSA's Vittoria Baccino, all in straight sets. Nine of her 15 singles wins were straight set victories, and she clinched the last four team victories for Tarleton State, all conference wins.
Across her four-year decorated career, Makantasi has gone 58-20 (.744) in singles play.
For Boisson, she matches Makantasi with her third Singles All-Conference award, twice now with Singles All-Conference Second Team recognition.
This season, Boisson has gone 12-6 in singles play, all matches played on Courts 1-2. During the regular season, she went 5-2 in WAC singles play, winning her first ever match on Court 1 on April 5 against Stephen F. Austin, defeating Ksenia Mamontova 7-5 6-3.
Boisson has been Tarleton's primary No. 2 player all season. She had a season-long five match winning streak from Feb. 2-17, highlighted by wins against Oral Roberts' Arina Sorokina and Louisiana Tech's Ana Rodrigues.
Like Makantasi, Boisson has had a special Texan career, one of the best to do it. She enters the WAC Tournament with an all-time singles record of 52-23 (.693).
First-year Texan Lorca took Singles All-Conference Second Team honors after leading the Texans in singles wins, finishing 16-2 (.889) this season. She went 2-0 at No. 3, 6-2 at No. 4 and 8-0 at No. 5. She also went 6-1 in WAC play, all matches played between Courts 3-4.
Lorca started the season a perfect 10-0, then went 6-1 over the last seven, all WAC matches. She won 11 times in straight sets, and of her four straight set WAC victories, she outscored her opponent 48-16.
The Texans finished second in the WAC going 6-1 in conference play, 15-3 overall this season. They are the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tournament for the second straight season. Since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2020-21, Tarleton is 23-4. They'll begin the WAC Tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT against Stephen F. Austin at the HEB Tennis Center in Harlingen, Texas.
