ERIE, Colo. – Tarleton State Men's Golf continues its fall campaign in Colorado at the Mark Simpson Invitational Monday through Tuesday.
The Texans return to Colorado for the second consecutive time this season after competing at the United States Air Force Academy Sept. 21-23. Tarleton State finished tied for 15th at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.
Tarleton State's five-man lineup for the Mark Simpson Invitational consists of three returning letterwinners (Alvaro Huidobro, Cristobal Sepulveda, Carson Gallaher) and two newcomers (Juan Ballester, Kellen Young). All five players cracked the lineup in Tarleton State's first tournament of the season.
The Texans, who enter its third year of NCAA Division I after reinstating the program, combined for one individual medalist, one All-WAC selection along with 11 individual top 10 finishes. Tarleton State welcomes back its three letterwinners who finished in the top 10 individually at the 2024 WAC Championship (Sepulveda - T-5th, Gallaher - T-5th, Huidobro - T-10th).
Hosted by Colorado, the Mark Simpson Invitational consists of 19 teams from 11 different conferences. In addition to seeing two 2024 NCAA Regional teams (Colorado State, Utah), the Texans will challenge themselves against seven opponents they faced in their season opener and see 12 new teams. Fellow WAC school Southern Utah is also in the same tournament field as the Texans for the second time this season.
Two teams in the Mark Simpson Invitational tournament field have already won team titles in fall 2024. Utah took home team victories at the Palouse Collegiate and followed that up with the Tindall Invitational title two weeks later. Colorado State captured its third consecutive Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Sept. 23.
Head coach Chance Cain saw great success at the Mark Simpson Invitational as an assistant coach for Utah, helping the Utes win the 2017 tournament title in Erie. Cain was instrumental in the team's first event victory since 2009 while helping Kyler Dunkle to Individual medalist honors.
Monday's play will consist of 36 holes with a 9:15 a.m. CT shotgun start. The final round on Tuesday will have a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be provided by Scoreboard by Clippd.
