Tarleton Women’s Basketball’s comeback comes up short in WAC opener at UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas  – Despite climbing within two points after trailing by 18, Tarleton Women's Basketball's come-from-behind effort was not enough on Saturday at the College Park Center and was defeated by UT Arlington 87-79 in its WAC opener.

Senior guard Arieona Rosborough scored a season-high 28 points to go with eight rebounds, obtaining her 600th career rebound in the process. Rosborough's 28 points off 9-for-15 shooting was the highest scoring total by a Tarleton player in a WAC opener.

UT Arlington began conference play with seven unanswered points and moved ahead by double digits after a basket while drawing the foul from Koi Love. Junior guard Karyn Sanford knocked down a 3-pointer to cut it back down to seven, but UTA responded with a 6-0 run to move ahead by 12. Rosborough prevented the momentum swinging towards UTA to end the first quarter, knocking down back-to-back jumpers on Tarleton's final two possessions to make it a 25-17 contest through 10 minutes.

Looking to close the game early, UTA opened the second quarter on a 10-0 scoring run and moved ahead by 18 with 7:13 remaining in the first half. The Mavericks' red-hot shooting, however, ignited a Tarleton offensive run that brought the game within a possession.

Tarleton started with a basket midway through the second quarter before scoring on three straight possessions to cut the UTA lead to 10. The Texans' high-powered second quarter offense continued following a UTA timeout, scoring eight straight points to cap off a 16-0 scoring run to pull within two points of the Mavericks' lead.

UTA's Avery Brittingham ended the Texans' scoring run with back-to-back turnaround jumpers with just over a minute to play, with the Lady Mavericks coming up with two made baskets before the first half came to a close. Rosborough gave the Texans momentum going into the locker room, hitting a pullup jumper to make it a 43-37 game at halftime.

Senior forward Andjela Bigović cut the UTA lead in half with a 3-pointer to open the third quarter, but the Lady Mavericks scored on three straight possessions to go back out in front by 11. Following a 3-pointer by senior guard Miannah Little and a basket from Rosborough, UTA once again responded by draining buckets and went back out in front by 10. Senior guard Niki Van Wyk forced a UTA turnover, converting a basket while drawing the foul to cut the deficit 66-57 heading into the final quarter.

UTA's offense continued to strike in the fourth period, maintaining a double-digit advantage with under three minutes left to play. Forcing UTA into no field goals in the final 3:18, Tarleton looked for a final comeback. The Texans went on a quick 5-0 scoring run with just over one minute left to play.

The Lady Mavericks, however, clinched the win by preventing another Tarleton basket and sinking four of its final six free throws.

Tarleton returns home to Wisdom Gym for a two-game WAC homestand next week, beginning with Southern Utah Thursday at 7 p.m.
