ST. GEORGE, Utah – It was another battle between two Western Athletic Conference teams on Thursday night in St. George, Utah, and it ended with a 1-0 final in favor of Utah Tech over Tarleton State.
The Texans (7-6-3, 1-4-1 WAC) lost by a goal to Utah Tech (6-5-4, 2-2-2 WAC) on the road in a defensive stalemate just 11 days removed from beating them by a goal in an offensive onslaught in Stephenville, Texas, 4-3.
Utah Tech goalkeeper Brianna Frey was between the posts once again after allowing four goals to Tarleton State two weeks ago with just one save, but she was flawless Thursday, shutting out the Texans with five saves. Tarleton State started
Rylie Bloomfield at goalkeeper in this one, making her first start of the year and her second appearance. She earned eight saves at Greater Zion Stadium, the second most by a Texan goalkeeper this season.
The lone goal on the night occurred in the 54th minute by Lataya Brost, who slow-played her defender and fired one past a diving Bloomfield in the bottom right corner.
The Texans and Trailblazers each had 14 shots on the game, with Utah Tech owning a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Tarleton State's
Reegan Wagg was given a yellow card in the sixth minute, and the Trailblazers drew 12 fouls to their nine committed.
Four Texans played all 90 minutes; Bloomfield,
Zoe Ballard,
Victoria Lucksinger and
Kaitlyn Flanagan.
Stevie Reynolds had team-highs in shots (four) and shots on goal (two), with Wagg taking three shots (one SOG),
Gabrielle Williams two (one SOG) and
Adelaide Wyrzynski two off the bench.
Tarleton State (four conference points) has an opportunity to jump both Southern Utah (six conference points) and Abilene Christian (five conference points) with a win in its next match, a Sunday road contest at the Thunderbirds at 2 p.m. CT. That game will be broadcast on ESPN+ live from Thunderbird Soccer Field in Cedar City, Utah.
