CEDAR CITY, Utah - Tarleton State Women's Soccer battled it out against Southern Utah Sunday afternoon, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
Sunday's matchup between the Texans (7-6-4, 1-4-2 WAC) and the Thunderbirds (3-9-3, 2-4-1 WAC) showed to be a fairly even match as possession bounced back and forth between the two teams. Action started to pick up in the final few minutes as both teams put scores on the board within the final 15 minutes. Senior Avery Harr scored the sole goal for the Texans with the help of Jaycie Bass, and Zoe Ballard was a defensive standout for Tarleton State.
Ballard made several deflections throughout the course of the match, including a great one coming in the 17th minute of play. A SUU shot was sent from just in front of the goal, but Ballard reached out and was able to send it back out of the box to keep the Thunderbirds off the board.
Rylie Bloomfield started in the net tonight, her second starting appearance of the season, where she faced mainly low shots by the Thunderbirds. In the 29th minute, Bloomfield made a crucial save for TSU. Starting at midfield, a Thunderbird dribbled the ball all the way down the right sideline to almost the endline, where she fired a shot at the goal. Bloomfield made a good read and caught the low ball in the right side of the goalie area, keeping Southern Utah scoreless.
Tarleton State had a great scoring opportunity late in the first half when Paisley Mabra and Jaycie Bass took back-to-back shots at the SUU goal. Mabra took the first shot from the right corner of the box, but it was deflected by the Southern Utah goalkeeper and sent out towards Bass, where she took another shot but was just high over the crossbar.
The Thunderbirds scored the first goal of the game in the 75th minute off a loose ball that was saved just seconds before.
However, the lead didn't last long. With only four minutes left in the game, Tarleton State scored a goal of their own to tie the match. Bass sent the ball flying across the field from right midfield to Harr, who was directly in front of the goal. Harr headed the ball past the Thunderbird goalkeeper to bring the score to 1-1.
Tarleton State will play their final road match on Saturday before returning home to close out the regular season. The Texans will be kicking off against Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. at Elmer Gray Stadium.
