Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Grant Cohen

Nationally-ranked Kansas State tops Tarleton State in first-ever women’s basketball game at EECU Center

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Women's Basketball gave No. 25 nationally-ranked Kansas State all they could handle through three quarters, but the Wildcats pulled away in the final period and defeated the Texans 78-57 in the first-ever women's basketball game at the EECU Center Monday night.

K-State, a 2025 Sweet 16 team, was the highest nationally-ranked team to play at Tarleton State. The Wildcats were the first women's basketball team from a Power 4 conference to visit Stephenville.

2025 All-WAC guard Jakoriah Long picked up right where she left off from last season, scoring a team-high 19 points. Long also knocked down three 3-pointers to go with three steals, shooting 66.7% from the floor overall.

Senior guard Gia Adams also added to the scoring by dropping 15 points in her Texan debut. Senior guard/forward Kyriana Jones and junior forward Allie Myers led the Texans on the glass with five boards each.

"I thought we showed good effort and I don't think the final score was indicative of how we played," head coach Bill Brock said. "We played against some really good players from a Power 4 Conference tonight. You're never happy with a defeat, but I'm happy with our effort tonight."

Long scored the first women's basketball bucket in a game at the EECU Center, getting the historic basket at the 9:07 mark in the first quarter to give the Texans the opening advantage. K-State responded with five straight points and stretched its lead late in the first quarter, but a layup from Adams and three straight free throws trimmed the deficit. Senior guard Luka Malinka capped off the opening period with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that made it a two-point game.

The Texans tied it up with a pair of free throws before K-State responded with a 3-pointer after knocking down a pair from the charity strike. K-State took a double-digit lead off a 15-0 scoring run in the closing minutes of the second quarter.

Tarleton State, however, refused to go down without a fight.

Long knocked down a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the half after the Texans hit two free throws and a jumper, getting the defensive stop on K-State's final possession of the half to set up the last shot. The Texans answered with another buzzer-beating 3-pointer, this time from Adams to make it a 10-point game.

Even when K-State delivered an offensive punch, Tarleton State answered back.

The Texans picked up right where they left off, with Long knocking down a 3-pointer to open the third quarter scoring. Tarleton State converted back-to-back layups, with another jumper bringing the deficit down to single digits entering the final period. K-State stretched its lead and carried the momentum to the final buzzer, shooting 47% to close out the game.

Tarleton State will begin the 2025-26 regular season on Monday, November 3 at the EECU Center, taking on Schreiner at 7 p.m.
