Tarleton State Tennis sweeps September WAC monthly awards

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis swept the first monthly awards from the Western Athletic Conference, the league announced Friday.

Freshman Marissa Minetti was named WAC Singles Player of the Month for September, posting an undefeated 6-0 record. Seniors Emma Persson and Clara Sobius were named Doubles Players of the Month for September.

The awards mark the Texans' midseason monthly/weekly award total at the Division I level to 49 under head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron

Playing in her first collegiate tennis matches as a Texan, Minetti went unbeaten in September and lost only one set the entire month. The freshman won the Flight F singles draw of the ACU Classic and collected her first bagel (6-0 set) in collegiate tennis on Sept. 14 in the Cowgirl Invite.

Arriving in Stephenville as the first Texan in the Division I era from Finland, Minetti finished second in the U21 National Championship. She had a third-place finish at the Women's Finnish Championship and competed for the Tampereen Tennisseura TaTS club to lead them to second place in the Finnish Tennis League in 2025.

Persson/Sobius went 5-1 in doubles as a duo in September, with their only loss coming to Arina Oreshchenkova/Elena Daskalova from Texas Tech. The senior team also posted an undefeated 3-0 record in doubles at the Cowgirl Invite.

A five-time WAC Doubles Player of the Week award winner last spring, Persson received All-WAC Second Team honors with Maretha Burger for doubles. She posted a 12-4 doubles record, playing all but one match at the No. 1 position. Persson was also named the WAC Player and Freshman of the Year in 2023.

Sobius came up with 11 doubles wins last spring, including a 10-3 record at the No. 3 doubles position. The Canadian won six of her final eight doubles matches of the season with partner Maria Castano and helped the Texans clinch the doubles point in the WAC Tournament Semifinals. Sobius is also a two-time WAC All-Tournament Team honoree.

Under Douglas-Miron in five years at the Division I level, Tarleton State has won the WAC Coach of the Year award, the WAC Player of the Year award, the WAC Freshman of the Year award twice, and 18 All-Conference honors (eight Singles All-WAC First Team, one Doubles All-WAC First Team, seven Singles All-WAC Second Team, two Doubles All-WAC Second Team). The Texans have also earned 49 midseason monthly or weekly awards (five Singles Player of the Month, two Doubles Team of the Month, 20 Singles Player of the Week, and 22 Doubles Team of the Week).

Tarleton State will go up against some of the top competition in Texas next week, competing at the ITA Texas Regional Championships in Fort Worth starting Oct. 9.
