Tarleton State Tennis takes on Texas’ top competition in ITA Texas Regional Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis will go up against some of the best collegiate players in the state of Texas starting Thursday, competing in the ITA Texas Regional Championships at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Seven Texans will compete in Thursday's singles qualifying round starting at 8 a.m. Sophomore Maria Castano is set to play in the singles main draw starting on Friday. All doubles action will begin on Friday.

Tarleton State had success at last year's event, which featured an All-Texan doubles final of the consolation draw. Emma Persson and Noelia Lorca clinched the consolation doubles draw by defeating teammates Ximena Morales and Maria Castano 8-6. Persson also shined in singles, collecting wins over opponents from SMU and North Texas in the main draw to advance to the Round of 16.

Persson has four main draw singles wins in her career at the ITA Texas Regional Championships. She has advanced to the round of 16 as a true freshman in 2022 and as a junior in 2024.

Sophomore Duru Kuscu secured a spot in the singles main draw as a freshman last year, collecting a pair of wins in the qualifying draw. Kuscu did not lose a set in the qualifying draw en route to being the second Tarleton State true freshman in the last three years to qualify for the ITA Texas Regional Championships main draw.

The Texans had a strong showcase in September, sweeping the Western Athletic Conference monthly awards. Freshman Marissa Minetti was named WAC Singles Player of the Month for September. Persson and senior Clara Sobius were named Doubles Players of the Month for September.

Minetti posted an undefeated 6-0 record and lost only one set the entire month. The freshman won the Flight F singles draw of the ACU Classic and collected her first bagel (6-0 set) in collegiate tennis on Sept. 14 in the Cowgirl Invite.

Persson/Sobius went 5-1 in doubles as a duo in September, with their only loss coming to Arina Oreshchenkova/Elena Daskalova from Texas Tech. The senior team also posted an undefeated 3-0 record in doubles at the Cowgirl Invite.
