Tarleton State Tennis returns home to take on New Mexico Saturday

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis follows a three-match road trip with a home match against New Mexico on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Tarleton Tennis Facility.

The Texans hold a 5-3 record, with their most recent match resulting in a 6-1 win at Incarnate Word. At home, the Texans remain undefeated at 3-0, having previously defeated Collin College 7-0 on Jan. 25.

Tarleton State Tennis swept the WAC's weekly honors for the third time this season on Tuesday, with junior Emma Persson being named the Singles Player of the Week and was put on the Doubles Team of the Week with senior Maretha Burger.

It is the first time since the 2021-22 season the Texans have won the WAC's Singles Player and Doubles Team of the Week honor in the same week on three separate occasions. This is Burger and Persson's second WAC Doubles Team of the Week honor this season, with their first coming on Jan. 28. Persson's Singles Player of the Week award marks her first of the season.

The duo has a season record of 6-1, the best among Tarleton State's doubles teams. Burger/Persson went 2-0 last week, defeating the No. 1 doubles team from UTSA and Incarnate Word on the road. Burger picked up her 21st career doubles win while Persson won her 29th career doubles victory at Tarleton State.

Burger accumulated her fourth WAC doubles team of the week honor at Tarleton State. Burger played the No. 1 doubles position in all 21 matches last season for the Texans. The South Africa native finished with a 15-6 record in doubles and tied for the most doubles wins on the team.

In singles last weekend, Persson went 2-1 at No. 1 singles for Tarleton State and won her previous two matches. Persson won via tiebreak twice and collected her first bagel (6-0 set) of the season on Sunday. After handing the first loss of the season to UTSA's No. 1 singles player, Letizia Corsini, Persson collected her 26th career singles win at Tarleton State on Sunday.

In their last matchup against Incarnate Word, Burger recorded her first singles win of the season on Court 6 by defeating McKenzey Byfield in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. This was Burger's first singles appearance since March 1, 2024, and her seventh singles win at Tarleton State.

Senior Noelia Lorca and freshman Maria Castano were victorious in doubles on Court 2 with a score of 6-3, while juniors Clara Sobius and Adeliya Mukhutdinova secured their victory on Court 3 with a score of 6-2.

A Texan trio fought hard for victory in three sets, with Lorca and Castano rallying from behind. After Lorca lost 6-1 in the first set on Court 2, the senior rebounded in the second set, winning six of the eight games to push for a decisive third set. The WAC Fall Invitational Singles champion secured the comeback victory, winning in three sets with scores of 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Overall, the Tarleton State Texans are 29-16 in singles matches and 17-3 in doubles matches.

The New Mexico Lobos have a 5-4 record, with victories over Weber State, UTEP, and New Mexico State in their last three matches. Starting Friday, they will embark on a two-match road trip to Texas, where they will face Abilene Christian before traveling to Stephenville on Saturday.

Live scoring will be available for all matches. Saturday's match will be available to watch on WAC International. Admission to all Tarleton State home tennis matches is free.
