Texan Baseball drops series opener to LMU

LOS ANGELES, California – Tarleton State Baseball (9-10) fell to Loyola Marymount (10-8) during the series opener on Friday evening at Page Stadium, 10-2.

The Lions snapped Tarleton State's five-game win streak by tacking on nine combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Loyola Marymount's bullpen registered 16 strikeouts opposed to the Texans' five.

Jake Burcham received the start at the mound for the Purple and White. Burcham put together a strong performance, pitching 5.2 innings of work and striking out four batters. Burcham did not allow an earned run throughout his 24 batters faced.

Slade McCloud hit a leadoff single in the second inning to mark his sixth consecutive game with a hit, the longest active hit streak on the team. Tarleton State remained scoreless in the second inning despite McCloud's single.

Robbie Ayers hit a leadoff single for the Lions in the bottom of the third but was caught stealing thanks to a stellar throw from Sergio Guerra. LMU capitalized off a defensive miscue from the Texans to put a runner on first base. Beau Akeney then hit an RBI single to put the Lions on the board, giving LMU a one-run advantage after three innings of baseball.

Burcham held the Lions scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings, registering a strikeout in both stanzas. Tarleton State, however, was unable to put up any runs and the game stayed at 1-0.

Tyson Drake got things going in the seventh inning by drawing a leadoff walk. This was followed by a single from Jaime Perez which set up two runners with zero outs. Texan junior Carson Lorch then flipped the momentum in Tarleton State's favor, launching a two-RBI double off the wall that propelled the Purple and White to a 2-1 lead. This marked Lorch's seventh RBI of the year in just seven appearances.

Loyola Marymount responded with a five-run seventh inning that contained a grand slam from Devan Ornelas. The Lions accumulated two hits, two walks, two steals and a hit-by-pitch in the seventh stanza.

After holding the Texans scoreless in the eighth, Akeney launched a three-run home run to give the Lions an extra boost. Tarleton State eventually dropped the series opener, 10-2.

The Purple and White will look to bounce back tomorrow night at 8 p.m. The ballgame will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be found here
