STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Tarleton State Baseball (11-14) took down the SFA Lumberjacks (9-15) on Sunday afternoon, winning 8-3 and clinching the series victory.

The Texans notched 14 hits on Sunday afternoon, keeping their momentum going from Saturday evening where they tallied a season-high 17 hits. The Lumberjacks registered six hits and both squads had one error apiece.

Holt Gibson received the nod at the mound for the Texans, pitching 5.0 innings of work and only allowing one earned run. Gibson held the Lumberjacks scoreless through the first two innings and did not allow a runner on base through his first six batters.

Rayner Heinrich hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the first frame and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Jaime Perez singled to left field, advancing Heinrich to third with one out on the board. Slade McCloud walked to load the bases but Tarleton State was unable to put up any runs, leaving the first inning scoreless.

The Texans tallied two runs in the bottom of the second. Sergio Guerra hit a leadoff single, followed by two more singles from Carson Lorch and Lane Brewster to load the bases with no outs. Heinrich sacrificed to score Guerra for the first run of the ballgame, then Perez drove in Lorch via a sacrifice fly. Tyson Drake and Heinrich orchestrated a double steal to set them both up in great position but the Texans couldn't bring them in, leaving the second inning 2-0.

SFA rallied back in the third stanza when Cooper Schneider hit a two-RBI single that brought in Ben Hoshizak and Cermondrick Bland, tying the game up at 2-2. The ballgame would remain scoreless until the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth with two outs on the board, Tarleton State regained the lead on a scoring spurt fueled by a single from Drake, an RBI double from Perez and a home run from Slade McCloud. This marked McCloud's second home run of the season and his first since opening weekend, where he won WAC Player of the Week. The Purple and White left the sixth inning with a 5-2 advantage.

Tyler Olson and Ethan Jaques came in for relief, holding SFA scoreless through the seventh and eighth innings.

In the bottom of the eighth frame, Drake hit a leadoff single for his second hit of the game. After a groundout and a flyout that advanced the senior to third base, Ike Shirey walked, putting runners on first and third. Trace Morrison capitalized on this opportunity and launched his first home run of the year, a no-doubter to right field. This broke the game open for Tarleton State, giving them a six-run lead heading into the final inning. 

The Lumberjacks tacked on a run in the ninth but couldn't erase the deficit and dropped the series finale, 8-3. Tarleton State will look to keep their momentum going in Lubbock against Texas Tech on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
