Tarleton State Baseball drops inaugural matchup against HCU

HOUSTON - Tarleton State Baseball (20-26) fell to the Houston Christian Huskies (24-19) on Wednesday evening, losing 10-4 at Husky Field.

The Texans posted 15 hits compared to the Huskies' 13. Each team registered seven strikeouts apiece. Tarleton State had two errors on the defensive side of the ball while HCU had zero.

The Purple and White had three players with three or more hits. Carson Lorch tallied a team-high three hits and two runs while Trace Morrison and Slade McCloud also had three hits each.

The Huskies got on the board early in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Rhett Hendricks. The Texans responded immediately in the top of the second when Lorch hit a lead-off triple, followed by a sacrifice fly from Sergio Guerra to knot the ballgame at 1-1.

Houston Christian regained the lead in the bottom of the second when Graham Laxton lifted a solo shot to left field, making the game 2-1. After a scoreless third frame from the Purple and White, the Huskies tacked on two more runs off a two-RBI homer from Tevis Payne, giving HCU a 4-1 advantage after three.

The Texans couldn't break through in the fourth stanza despite a lead-off single from McCloud, going down on a double play and a flyout. Houston Christian orchestrated their best inning of the game, putting up three runs off four hits and an error. This three-run spurt was capped off by a two-run home run from Parker Edwards that scored Kenneth Dutka, extending the Huskies' lead to six runs.

Rayner Heinrich and Morrison tallied two consecutive singles with two outs on the board. Tarleton State, however, couldn't respond in the fifth frame. Ryan Beaird came onto the mound for the Purple and White, putting together a scoreless inning of work and two strikeouts to keep the game at 7-1.

The Texans scratched off three runs in the top of the sixth. McCloud hit a lead-off single, followed by a single from Lorch that advanced him to second. Guerra took advantage of this and blasted an RBI double to center field to score McCloud. Guerra led the Texans with two RBIs on the evening. Tyson Drake hit a sacrifice fly to score Lorch, cutting the Huskies' lead to four runs. The Texans' scoring spurt was concluded by an RBI groundout from Ike Shirey that drove in Guerra.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when HCU put up three more runs, putting the lead back to six. Tarleton State couldn't rally back and eventually fell 10-4. The Purple and White will look to bounce back this weekend when they head to Riverside to battle against the California Baptist Lancers.
