Tarleton State falls to UTEP in hard-fought battle late Thursday evening

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Tarleton State Women's Soccer fell to UTEP 0-1 in a hard-fought battle late Thursday evening at University Field after a weather delay halted the game.

Initial kickoff for the Texans and the Miners was delayed for nearly two hours due to inclement weather, pushing the start time to around 10 p.m. The Texans fiercely battled through the 90 minutes but were unable to come out on top.

With 31 minutes left in the first half, goalkeeper Emma Barnes earned the first save for the Texans, using her body to get in front of a UTEP defender and block a shot from just outside of the goal area.

In the 20th minute of the game, the ball was passed from the right side of the box to Reegan Wagg, who immediately turned and fired it toward the goal, but it ended up being too high.

Near the end of the first half, Barnes went airborne to secure a major save for the Texans off of a restart ball that was headed by one of the Miners.

UTEP put the only score on the board with 20 minutes left in the match, heading in a corner kick from the left corner of the field.

In her third straight starting appearance, Barnes set a new personal record during her Tarleton State career with nine saves and 18 shots faced. The Texans totaled five shots compared to UTEP's 18 shots, and Reegan Wagg led the team with both of her shots being on goal.

Tarleton State will return home this weekend to begin their five-game homestand, starting with Incarnate Word on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m at the Tarleton State Soccer Complex.
