Tarleton State Tennis off to fast fall start with outing at Cowgirl Invite

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Tarleton State Tennis had a strong outing at its first event of the fall season, posting a 21-3 combined singles record and 9-3 doubles record at the Cowgirl Invite this past weekend.

The Texans had four players who posted a perfect 3-0 record, including seniors Emma Persson and Adeliya Mukhutdinova to go with freshman Aya Ishi and Marissa Minetti

"The team was excited to get things going this past weekend," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "We knew what we were working on individually and as a team. I think all of us showed up and accomplished our goals. I can already tell this group is special and look forward to seeing this team compete again at the end of the month."

After a three-set win to start singles play, Persson won the second set tiebreak to defeat Louisiana Lafayette's Safia Zenbi in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4) on Saturday. Persson, the 2023 WAC Player of the Year, capped off her first fall tournament of the season with a straight sets win over Texas State's Ireland Simme 6-1, 6-3.

Mukhutdinova did not lose a set en route to three straight singles wins, only losing one game in Saturday's contest against Louisiana Lafayette's Marilou Bressan 6-0, 6-1. Picking up her first bagel of the fall season, Mukhutdinova finished the Cowgirl Invite with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Texas State's Charlotte Roesch.

Texan freshmen have hit the ground with Tarleton State Tennis, with that truth being told in 2025-26. Ishi posted a bagel (a 6-0 set) in her first set as a Texan in her singles match on Friday, edging McNeese's Leana Gomez in three sets 6-0, 3-6, 13-11. The freshman from Japan did not lose a set en route to a pair of singles wins on Saturday and Sunday.

Minetti had to overcome some adversity following her straight sets win on Friday, dropping the first set in Saturday's contest. The freshman from Finland, however, bounced back and won the final two sets to defeat Louisiana Lafayette's Rocio Amoros 1-6, 6-4, 10-4. She followed with a bagel and only lost one game in Sunday's singles match to clinch victory over Texas State's Julia Richardet 6-0, 6-1.

Tarleton State has time off from competition, with its next event taking place Sept. 26-28 in Abilene for the ACU Invite.

The Texans will also host a free Family Weekend Kids Clinic on Saturday at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Sign up information and questions about the clinic can be directed to Abigail Wild (AWILD@tarleton.edu).
