Tarleton State Tennis clinches four draws in ACU Classic

ABILENE, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis won four draws in the ACU Classic that concluded Sunday at the Cecil and Judi Eager Tennis Pavilion.

Seniors Ximena Morales (Flight F) and Clara Sobius (Flight H) along with freshman Marissa Minetti (Flight G) won their respective draws in singles without dropping a set. Sophomore Duru Kuscu and freshman Dariia Medviedieva also went undefeated to clinch the Flight D doubles draw.

"This weekend was another great weekend for our team," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "The team went 18-6 this weekend in singles and that's pretty impressive. We stayed consistent throughout the weekend and competed well. We had a lot of highlights. Clara, Marissa and Ximena went undefeated in singles, winning their draws. They stayed true to their game style and had great energy. Maria and Emma played outstanding matches, beating players from Texas Tech and SFA to advance to their respective finals. The quality of tennis was high overall and I look forward to more tennis in October."

Morales dominated the Flight F draw and defeated opponents from Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian. After a 6-4, 6-1 straight sets win in the quarterfinals, Morales took care of business against SFA's Ana Paula Chavez 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. The senior stayed hot in the finals, overpowering ACU's Elsa Luthar 6-0, 6-1 on the Wildcats' home court.

Sobius took down opponents from ACU, Sam Houston and UT Arlington in the round robin style Flight H. The Canadian won in straight sets over ACU's Jessica Board (6-1, 6-3) and Sam Houston's Isabella Garza (6-3, 6-2) before capping off the tournament with a win over UTA's Natalia Gonzalez (6-4, 6-3).

After going a perfect 3-0 in her first collegiate fall tournament, Minetti's stellar play continued in Flight G. The freshman won a tightly-contested quarterfinal match before defeating Sam Houston's Ella Fitcher in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Minetti finished September with a perfect 6-0 record, winning Flight G with a straight sets win over New Mexico State's Anna Klimova (6-1, 6-3).

Senior Emma Persson and sophomore Maria Castano also shined in singles, advancing to their respective draws' finals. Castano climbed back after losing the first set to win a three-set battle over Texas Tech's Ella Brownback in the Flight A semifinals (3-6, 6-2, 6-4). Persson did not win a game in her first set of the Flight B semifinals, but persevered to win the next two sets and defeat Stephen F. Austin's Ksneia Mamontova (0-6, 6-4, 7-5).

Kuscu/Medviedieva were the Texans' top finishers in doubles, clinching victory over opponents from Stephen F. Austin, New Mexico State, and Sam Houston to capture Flight D. The Texan duo won their first round in the tiebreak before taking the next two rounds in the round robin style draw. Morales/Minetti also reached the finals in their doubles draw in Flight C before falling to Louisiana Tech.

Tarleton State will take on some of the best collegiate competition in Texas in its next fall event, traveling to Fort Worth for the ITA Texas Regional Championships at TCU beginning Oct. 9.
