Quick Points

The Texans opened the 2025 campaign with a 2-1 record at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic hosted by Louisiana.

• Tarleton State opened the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of New Orleans. The Texans posted a .408 hitting percentage, their second best in the Division I era.

• On Sunday, the Texans fell behind early to Texas Southern before orchestrating a reverse sweep to finish the weekend 2-1.

LaNeah Lara has recorded double-digit kills in each of the first three matches for the Texas. She  broke her career-high mark with 12 kills in the opener, matched it on Saturday and set a new best with 13 against the Tigers.

Morgan Carter has established herself in the libero role for the Texans. She is the only Texan to notch double-digit assist totals in each of the first three contests.

Teya Nguyen is the only Texan to register a double-double so far this season. The San Jose State transfer notched 18 assists and 13 digs in the opener against New Orleans.

• First-year head coach Jazymne Johnson collected her first collegiate win with a sweep in the season opener. She is one of 25 first-year head coaches in the nation this season and one of 11 to record a winning record in the first weekend.

• The Texans went a perfect 3-0 a season ago in the Tarleton State Invitational.

• Since becoming a D1 program in 2020, the Texans have hosted five invitationals and have posted a cumulative 13-3 record. Tarleton State has gone undefeated in four of those five so far.

Texans Open Season with win over Privateers

• Against New Orleans, the Texans swept 3-0 in their season opener earning Coach Jazymne Johnson her first win as head coach. 

LaNeah Lara set a career-high that she matched and later broke in the third match with 12 kills. She also posted a .478 hitting percentage.

• For just the fourth time in program history, and the first time since Nov. 13, 2021, the Texans recorded at least a .400 attack percentage. The Purple and White hit .408 in the match, the second highest in the Division I era.

Teya Nguyen earned her first double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs.

• The Texans rattled off 10 consecutive points to take the third and final set to complete the sweep.

Emma Burke tabbed Preseason All-WAC Again!

• For the second consecutive season, Emma Burke earned Preseason All-WAC Honors.

• Last season, she led the conference in hitting percentage (.402) and ranked third in total blocks (123), earning All-WAC Second Team honors.

• Burke is one of four returning Texans for the 2025 campaign

• The senior is the only Texan to receive the honor after becoming the first a season ago.

Texans end weekend with Reverse Sweep

• Tarleton State Volleyball reverse swept Texas Southern to finish 2-1 on the weekend.

LaNeah Lara topped her career high match from each of the past two matches notching 13 kills. 

• Madison Rice-Lockett and Madison Frank also add double-digit kill totals. Rice-Lockett recorded 12 while Frank posted 11. 

Emma Burke posted a match-best seven blocks to fuel the Texan defensive efforts. 

• The Texans notched 12 service aces, their most in a match since Sept. 16, 2023 against UMES. 

• TSU dropped the first two sets, 25-22. 

• The Texans used an 8-2 run in the middle of the third set to ultimately take the set, 25-16.

• Set four was monumental for the Texans as a four-point run to close the set helped tie the match at two. 

•  The Texans opened the fifth set strong with another four-point run to help them quickly close the fifth set , 15-6 and come out of the match victorious.

Jazymne Johnson tabbed new leader of the Texans

• Jazymne Johnson was named the head coach of the Texans on Dec. 17, 2024.

• Prior to leading the Texans she served as an assistant coach before being elevated to associate head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette from 2021-2024

• She spent four seasons playing collegiate volleyball at Middle Tennessee (2012-14) and Mississippi State (2014-16).

• The DeSoto, Tex., native, is one of 25 active first-year head coaches.

• Out of the 25 first-year head coaches, Johnson is one of 11 to post a winning record in her first weekend of play this season.

• Johnson received her bachelor's degree in communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism from Mississippi State in December 2016. She earned her master's in business administration from Harding in December 2020

• Johnson was a 2020 AVCA Diversity Award recipient and is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. 

• She currently serves on the AVCA Assistant coaches committee.

Meet the Texans

Tehana Mo'o served as Team Captain her senior season of HS and lettered three years in track and field.

Leila Paraoan was ranked as the No. 11 player in her graduating class from Hawaii. She also was named 2025 All-Girls OIA West Player of the Year, and "Hurricane Athlete of the Year" in 2025.

LaNeah Lara Served as a team captain all four years in HS. She was named MVP and served on the National Honor Society.

Breannah Peterson was named Franklin High School Newcomer of the Year. She also received 1-6A First Team All-District honors, All-City Honorable Mention recognition, and was selected as a GEPGCA All-Star.

Megan Hodges was named Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team in 2019 and 2021 and was a National Honor Society member in high school.

Taylynn Biggs served as team captain her senior year. She earned First Team All-District honors and was selected District MVP.

Leddy Rae Guinn was named District 6-4A Defensive Player of the Year at libero. She was also a four-time Academic All-District honoree and three-time All-District selection at Stephenville HS.

Madison Frank served as a team captain her senior year of HS. She also lettered in track two years where she advanced to regionals in triple jump.

Emma Burke was named District 11-4A Hitter of the Year in 2021. She served as a two-time team captain in her prep days.

Victoria Fontenot was a four year varsity starter and played as a setter for three years before transitioning to libero her senior year. She was a member of the State Finalist 2022 Canyon Ridge HS squad.

Alexa Earle earned District 26-6A Honorable Mention and was selected to the THSCA Academic All-State Second Team. She was named JV Defensive Player of the Year.

Madison Natori Rice-Lockett competed on the varsity team beginning in eighth grade. She was named team captain as a senior and was ranked as the number two recruit in Kentucky when she graduated.

Morgan Carter is a proud military child who has lived in four states. She helped lead Plano West to a state championship runner-up finish in 2019.

Alyssa Dinh has two brothers, Tam Dinh and Sang Dinh, both of whom play professional basketball overseas. She earned varsity letters for the Cougars while competing at a high level in district and regional play.

Teya Nguyen played four years on varsity and served as team captain. She was also a two-time WCAL First Team All-League selection.

Makayla White collected multiple honors during her high school career, including Blocker of the Year, Second Team All-District, First Team All-District, and Academic All-District recognition.

The Texans will be back in action next week at the Islanders Classic on Thursday and Friday. The Texans will play just two matches against the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and Sam Houston State.
