ACU’s fourth quarter rally hands Tarleton State Women’s Basketball heartbreaking loss

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Abilene Christian outscored Tarleton State Women's Basketball 22-11 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Texans 72-67 on Saturday afternoon at the EECU Center.

The Texans held a six-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but were held to 25% shooting in the final period.

Coming off her WAC Newcomer of the Week honor on Monday, freshman center Elodie Lutbert scored a season-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds. Senior guards Jakoriah Long (14 points), Kyriana Jones (13 points) and Gia Adams (11 points) also contributed to the Texans' offense. ACU guard Payton Hull led with a game-high 36 points on Saturday.

ACU struck first, scoring eight unanswered points after Tarleton State's opening bucket to take an early six-point lead. The Texans weathered the early storm, going on a 10-0 scoring run capped off by a pair of 3-pointers to force an ACU timeout.

The Wildcats made it a one-possession game with just over two minutes left to go in the opening period, with Long knocking down a 3-pointer to put the Texans up by five. Junior forward Shadasia Brackens hit a pair of free throws after another basket from ACU to give the Texans a 19-14 advantage.

Just as they had in the opening period, the Wildcats went on a scoring run to go out in front. ACU used a 6-0 scoring run to go back up 20-19. A pair of free throws from Adams allowed the Texans to retake the lead, with a 3-pointer from Long allowing the Texans to make it a four-point game with five minutes to play in the half.

A Lyles jumper and a pair of free throws from Jones pushed the Texans in front by eight, but a pair from the charity strike and a jumper from ACU cut the deficit in half. Jones answered with a 3-pointer before ACU converted a layup as time expired to make it a 37-32 game going into the locker room.

The back and forth battle continued in the second half, with both rivals trading one bucket after another. Long's corner 3-pointer put the Texans ahead by eight points before ACU answered right back with a triple of its own.

ACU prevented the Texans from hitting a basket for four and a half minutes, with junior forward Allie Myers breaking the drought with a layup. The Wildcats answered with a layup of their own before the Texans hit a free throw to make it a six-point game going into the final 10 minutes.

The Wildcats came out firing in the fourth quarter, going on an 8-1 scoring run to take a one-point lead with six and a half minutes to play. ACU also forced the Texans to play the final stretch without Long, who picked up her fifth and final foul. Taking advantage of Long's absence, the Wildcats hit a corner triple to take a four-point lead with five minutes left.

Adams stopped the bleeding with a jumper to make it a two-point game with 4:17 left to play before a pair of free throws from Brackens tied the game. ACU answered back with a 3-pointer on its next possession to go out in front 64-61.
